The perfect day out for families of all ages, Axe Valley Wildlife Park is set in the East Devon countryside and has a great variety of animals to see. They pride themselves in being a completely child-friendly zoo with plenty of daily activities perfect for all. Although the zoo is small there is a great list of animals from meerkats and lemurs to flamingos and tortoise. The Ringo’s Rest Café is a great place to head in between wandering around the zoo with plenty of food and drink offerings available.
Bicton Park Botanical Gardens
Bicton East, Budleigh Salterton, EX9 7BJ | 41 minute drive from resort
This 18th-century formal gardens and greenhouses make a great family day out in Devon. With over 300 years of history and 64 acres to explore Bicton Park Botanical Gardens is the perfect choice for all. There is so much to suit families of all ages here from the indoor and outdoor play areas, the Bicton Woodland Railway, various nature trails, countryside museum, garden centre, gift shop and more. As well as their seasonal events that are on throughout the year from craft fairs to meeting Santa.
Sidmouth Donkey Sanctuary
Slade House Farm, Weston, Sidmouth, EX10 0NU | 27 minute drive from resort
This free to visit donkey sanctuary is an award winning attraction that makes the perfect day out for everyone, especially since it is open 7 days a week. There are various events on, informative talks, exhibitions and more to enjoy during your visit and of course you will be able to see all the donkeys who have been rescued. The on site restaurant have dine in and takeaway options as well as plenty of dry seating areas for picnics. And make sure you stop at the gift shop for some donkey themed items before you leave.
Crealy Theme Park
Sidmouth Rd, Clyst St Mary, Exeter, EX5 1DR | 41 minute drive from resort
For the thrill seekers out there you will be pleased to know that Crealy Theme Park is under a 45 minute drive away from Hawkchurch. Known for being Devon’s best family theme park with over 60 rides and attractions, there is so much on offer to suit families and children of all ages. Some of their rides include twister, tidal wave, flying machine and the dino jeeps, they also have seasonal events and Sooty Land perfect for younger families.
Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium
The Cobb, Lyme Regis, DT7 3JJ | 15 minute drive from resort
This traditional family run aquarium it a great way to get an insight into the sea life that live in the local waters around the Jurassic Coast. Within the aquarium there are some unique interactive experiences you can get involved in like holding a starfish, hand feeding mullet and some fantastic photo opportunities. So if you are wanting to learn more about the local wildlife and aren’t wanting to drive to far from the resort the Lyme Regis Marine Aquarium would be perfect.
Beer Quarry Caves
Quarry Ln, Beer, Seaton, EX12 3AS | 24 minute drive from resort
Beer Quarry Caves is a huge man-made complex of caverns which had been quarried from around 50AD to 1920 and now they are a popular tourist spot. You can pre-book onto tours that take you on an hour long adventure through the vast caverns, some are that large they have been likened to a cathedral, so much so that they now offer weddings in the quarry.
