Conwy Castle

Rose Hill St, Conwy, LL32 8AY

As soon as you drive into Conwy you can awe at the sight of Conwy Castle, standing 30m high it’s an impressive fortification that you will definitely want to explore. You can walk around the walls of the castle for free and then if you want to head inside the castle you can learn about the history of Edward I during his conquest of Wales. Whilst you’re in Conwy go and see the Smallest House in Great Britain, get some fish and chips and sit on a bench and enjoy the views.

Caernarfon Castle

Castle Ditch, Caernarfon, LL55 2AY

Caernarfon Castle is a huge medieval fortress with three floors and a basement and the towers are around 30m high. You can explore all the different areas inside and the exhibitions in around 2 hours so it makes a great day out. This castle is one of the most impressive and well preserved in North Wales so it is definitely worth a visit if you are in the area. And there are plenty of other things to see and do in Caernarfon whilst you are there.

Gwrych Castle

Tan-Y-Gopa Rd, Abergele, LL22 8ET

Gwrych Castle has recently become more popular as it was used for I’m a Celebrity Get Me Out of Here in 2020 and 2021. It’s a Grade I listed 19th-century country house with 236 acres surrounding it. If you have ever drove to Conwy or Anglesey and used the A55 you will have probably seen it hidden amongst the trees and fields. It’s a great castle to explore and the gardens are beautiful too.

Beaumaris Castle

Castle St, Beaumaris, LL58 8AP

Beaumaris Castle can be found on Anglesey and is known as the greatest castle that was never built. Although due to lack of money and trouble starting in Scotland it meant the castle halted on building in 1320 and was the last of Edward I’s castles in North Wales. Even though it was never finished it still takes its place as part of the Castles & Town Walls of Edward I World Heritage Site.

Harlech Castle

Harlech, LL46 2YH

Another castle that was built by Edward I was Harlech Castle. A Grade I listed medieval fortification which has 108 steps to reach the ruins. The views from the castle are incredible and you can see across to Snowdonia National Park. This is another castle that you can see straight away when you get to Harlech as it is sat on the top of a rock face in the middle of the town.

Penrhyn Castle

Bangor, LL57 4HT

You’ll find Penrhyn Castle just outside of Bangor City and has a long history of Jamaican sugar fortunes and exploitation. The inside of the castle has been well preserved and you are able to explore inside and the gardens as well. The views from the castle are amazing looking out onto the quarry and surrounding countryside. It is now part of the National Trust and there is a castle café on site and a castle shop.
