Buying a holiday home can be intimidating, we’ve collated our most commonly asked questions by owners, is your question here?

Talacre Beach Resort has been a popular holiday home destination for over 50 years, with 5 star facilities available, only a 5 minute walk to the sandy beach and a wide range of caravans and luxury lodges available to buy to suit all budgets. With so much on offer it’s easy to see why Talacre Beach has been so popular.

Whether you’re a new owner or a seasoned owner looking for a change of scenery, it can all seem a little intimidating and you are sure to have a list of questions. In this post we’ve created a list of our most asked questions from owners, read below for more.

How often can I use my caravan?

We are open for 45 weeks of the year, and you are welcome to use your caravan as much as you like during this time.

Can I rent my caravan out?

No, Talacre Beach does not allow renting (sub-letting) of any owners caravans.

Can family and friends use it?

Yes, they can. On purchasing, you can receive up to 20 passes for your family and friends, which entitles them to all the benefits of ownership with us.

Do I get a discount in the facilities?

Owners don’t get a discount because they don’t need one – They get unlimited access and use of the park leisure facilities (indoor heated swimming pool, Gym, Saunas, pool side Jacuzzi and entertainment), they also book in on the Go-Active activities completely free of charge and have access to owner park events throughout the season, again free of additional charge in most cases.

What do the cost of site fees cover?

Site fees help the upkeep and general maintenance of the park. This includes everything from our 24 hour security team, to the fabulous grounds team keeping the park looking colourful. As an award winning holiday park, you can enjoy your own slice of the 5 star life at Talacre Beach.

Is there free Wi-Fi?

Wi-Fi is free across the park, and this includes your holiday home, where you can keep up to date with all your emails or social media, while enjoying the seaside.

Can I live in my caravan?

Although you are welcome to stay in your caravan as often as you wish during our 10 ½ month season, it cannot be your permanent home. You must have a permanent residence elsewhere and proof of residence is requested ever year.

Can I bring my dog?

Yes, we are a very dog friendly location with lots of local walks for you to enjoy, including the beach which will be only a 5 minute walk away from your caravan. We do ask that dogs are kept on a lead and they are picked up after, there are waste bins and pooper scoopers around the park.

What is a drain down service? Why would I need it?

A winter drain down service helps to protect your caravan. The service clears all of the water pipes that go into, and are around your caravan, of any water, which stops any burst pipes during winter frost months. We highly recommend this service to help protect your caravan during the winter, as we are all aware of how much damage a burst pipe can do.

The Bishop’s Palace has been the home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for over 800 years in this beautiful part of the country. Located only a 30 minute car journey from our 5 star Cheddar Woods Resort & Spa in Somerset, is the picturesque Bishop’s Palace and gardens, which is open to the public to explore. The Palace is surrounded by the beautiful moat, which is home to the famous swans and the flagstone drawbridge, spend the day exploring a true hidden gem in the heart of the city of Wells.

about The Bishop’s Palace

The Bishop’s Palace dates back to the early 13th Century, and is still used by the Bishop of Bath and Wells today, however it is an interesting example of the way buildings demonstrating the political power of the Medieval Bishops. Even though the Palace is still home to the current Bishop and his family, you can still explore a large number of spectacular rooms within the Palace.

Being home to countless Bishops over 800 years, most have managed to leave their own mark on the décor of Palace, but you can visit the Large Room with its original vaulted undercroft, before heading up the staircase to the first Bishop of Bath and Wells, Jocelin Trotman to the room where he entertained, worked, dined and slept. Take a stroll down the Long Gallery for insight and information on past Bishops and their portraits.

the chapel & great hall

Bishop Burnell, the Chancellor of the Exchequer under King Edward I, built the grandiose chapel between 1275 and 1292, and it has been used by the Bishops of Bath and Wells for their private prayers since.

The chapel is the ideal place to relax and reflect, while admiring the beautiful stone tracery and wonderful medieval carving details of the vaulted ceiling. Soak up the light spilling through the stunning stained glass windows, which were rescued from France after the 1789 Revolution, taken from damaged and abandoned churches.

Visit the ruins of the Great Hall, which was built in 1290 to entertain high society, all that remains today are two walls and 4 corner turrets. However, you can still appreciate the impressive size of a medieval hall used to entertain the Lords and Ladies of the day.

the wells & swans

The city of Wells was named after the number of flowing wells in the city, with many to be found around the picturesque gardens of The Bishop’s Palace. The wells have long held a sacred significance for the local people for over a thousand years, with the St Andrews holy well a particularly popular and religious well to visit. The ancient Well House, built in 1451, still stands today, it was set up Bishop Beckynton to provide fresh water to the townsfolk of Wells.

In the 1870’s a daughter of one of the Bishop’s first taught the swans, on the moat to ring a bell for food, and this has been a tradition ever since. There is a bell beneath the window of the Gatehouse, and when a member of staff is there a rope is attached to the bell, which the resident swans ring for food, new generations of swans are shown how to use the bell by their parents. The resident swans happily swim around the moat at their leisure, enjoying The Bishop’s Palace in their own way.

In May 2019, the Bishop’s Palace welcomed a new breeding pair of swans, as Wynn was left widowed when her mate sadly passed away in 2018, this made Wynn leave to find a colony of older birds to live with. However staff and the public alike are excited to welcome the new pair of swans, who have been introduced to the Palace and Moat by the Swan Rescue South Wales charity.

Training will be taking place for the swans to learn how to use the bell, and there will be a new bell added on the opposite side of the Gatehouse so visitors can enjoy better visibility of the swans all year round. The staff are very excited to start training the new pair in the bell-ringing ways of the previous Bishop’s Palace swans, and are hoping to see fluffy cygnets on the Moat with their parents later on in the year. Now is the time to visit and meet the new beautiful pair of swans!

Bishop’s table & what’s on

Enjoy some home cooked comfort food and spectacular views over the gardens and The Bishop’s Palace itself. The Bishop’s Table serves delicious homemade food, using locally sourced produce, the friendly café is known in Wells for a fabulous place to relax with a coffee and a slice of cake.

The Bishop’s Palace enjoys a full calendar of events all year round, from a wide range of theatre shows and exhibitions, to holding various festivals, including the Bath Film Festival. There are also family and community garden activity days, historical re-enactments, concerts, talks, workshops and demonstrations, there really is something for everyone. Enjoy beautiful landscape gardens, endless parkland and a wonderful Georgian family home at the Killerton House in Devon

The Killerton House is a National Trust property and is expertly kept, with over 6,000 acres of varying landscapes throughout the estate, including woodland, parkland, working farmland, orchards and hidden cottages. The beautiful 18th Century house was only meant to be a temporary home, while the Acland’s waited for their grand home to be built, but they fell in love with Georgian family home and it’s easy to see why.

the history of Killerton House

In 1778 Sir Thomas Dyke Acland, known as the 7th Baronet, commissioned architect John Johnson to build him a house, one which he would knock down once his ‘grand house’ was completed. That ‘grand house’ was never built, Killerton House was completed in 1779 and Sir Thomas loved Johnson’s creation he lived in it full-time.

Over the centuries there were various changes made to Killerton House, from turning the entrance hall into a large open space after a destructive fire, to changing the dining room into the music room. However, the Long Corridor, with its shallow domes, has been left untouched, along with the entrance on the south front, with its pediment supported by columns.
Sir Thomas wanted to build a house and garden, on an exceptional landscape at Killerton in Devon, which reflected his and his family’s position and importance in high society.

the chapel at Killerton House

Visit the picturesque chapel, where the grounds are beautifully kept and are the perfect place for those who seek comfort and quiet reflection.

The chapel was built in 1841, Sir Thomas enlisted architect CR Cockrell, who was known for his classical style, but reluctantly agreed to recreate the Norman-style St Joseph of Arimathea chapel of Glastonbury, with a few changes inside. Inside the pews face each other, rather than the altar at the front which was unusual for an English church, this meant the congregation could all see each other. As a very religious family, who were very devout in their beliefs, Sir Thomas was setting a seat of benign patriarch for himself. However, he was sometimes unorthodox, inviting the anti-slavery campaigner Samuel Crowther to speak at the chapel, Crowther later became the first black bishop.

Up until the 1960’s, the chapel bell would ring out to call the men to work every morning at Killerton House, Devon.

the bear’s hut

Out in the landscape, nestled between the trees, lays a curious structure at Killerton House, known as the Bear’s Hut. It was built in 1808 as a surprise gift for Sir Thomas’ wife Lydia. It was originally used as a summer house, the hut has a thatched roof and a breathtaking stained glass window, which was created from pieces collected by family members during their travels. During the 1860’s the hut gained its name by being used to have a black bear called Tom, brought from Canada to Killerton House by Gilbert, the 12th Baronet’s brother.

Killerton House events

As Killerton House is a National Trust property there is a whole calendar of events to enjoy and endless places to explore on the estate.

Discover the rooms inside the beautiful Killerton House, that exceed all Sir Thomas’ expectations for him to make it his family home in Exeter, Devon. Head to the second floor to see the impressive Fashion Collection, which is home to over 20,000 pieces, with items from the 18th and 19th Century, as well as high-end 20th Century items, including pieces from Chanel. The collection is also home to a beautiful sleeved waistcoat, which dates back to 1690.

Venture outside to follow the winding paths, take in the far-reaching views or find the wonderfully quirky features, such as the ice house.

Killerton House events are provided by the National Trust and therefore the estate is home to endless family fun, from chocolate egg hunts at Easter, to a whole range of arts and crafts workshops throughout the year.

Killerton House and Estate is open every day: 10am – 5pm. Please check the website for the most up-to-date information.

Since the incredibly popular TV show has hit the screen, The Poldark Mine has grown in popularity too, read about the real mine below

The Poldark TV show, starring Aiden Turner, follows Ross Poldark’s story of returning to Cornwall after the American War of Independence to find his life and inheritance in ruins. Poldark’s story develops as he is trying to help the people in the village while attempting to run the copper tin mines, the show has kick-started a whole new interest into the tin mining industry in Cornwall.

the poldark mine

The real Poldark Mine is less than a 30 minute drive from our own Mullion Cove Coastal Retreat and it is the only full tin mine open to the public in Cornwall. It has been giving guided tours to the underground Wheal Roots for over 45 years, the underground 18th Century tin mine stands at 11 degrees all year round, so it’s a nice place to cool down in the summer and can often feel warmer than the surface during the winter.

The mine is one of the most historic locations depicting the Cornish mining history, with the nearby Parish of Wendon as the oldest mining district in Cornwall and was the most populated by 1779. The process known as Tin Streaming started in the Bronze Age in the Cornish area, a ground-fast granite outcrop was used over 4000 years ago to pulverise the alluvial tin ore that was from the Cober River, this called the Trenear Mortar Stone and it’s listed as a Scheduled Ancient Monument of National Significance, and the only one of its kind in England.

the Cornish heritage collection

The historic mine and fascinating Heritage Collection is set in beautiful rural gardens, which are slowly being restored to their former glory, and in 2015 there was a bandstand added that has since gone on to host a number of concerts and play for all ages to enjoy.

Following a period of neglect the mine was actually closed in 2013 and had filed for bankruptcy, however, it was saved from this sad fate by the new owners in June 2014, who had restoration and a new educational policy of Cultural Heritage Management plans for the mine. The museum was relocated to a larger building and it has expanded with larger and brand-new exhibits every year since. There has also been a wonderful tea room added, with a coffee and refreshments counter, which overlooks the picturesque gardens.

The museum is home to a wide range of historic items, including the Tech-Tin and Copper section, which houses items from telecoms, teleprinters and telephones, which all rely on tin and copper parts internally to work. There are also artefacts from the famous Penny Lane, Methodist Chapel in Liverpool, such as the pulpit, a number of pews and even the large pipe organ. The team at the Heritage Centre are continuing to restore a variety of historic machines and collections found in lost sheds around the site.

The Poldark TV show has created a whole new interest in the Poldark Mine and its true history, which is even more fascinating than the show, having the first female owner ever. There are new exhibits consistently being added, and a large amount of restoration work in the grounds, including the striking Victorian house, there is so much to see here. Travel underground into the Poldark Tin Mine and feel what life would have been like for those forgotten miners who helped to shape the modern world.
