After a recent trip to Hawkchurch Resort & Spa I was blown away by all the little details that they have created and I wanted to share them with you! Having a favourite park is kind of like having a favourite puppy, it’s pretty impossible here at DE HQ because all our locations really are beautiful (and I’m not just saying that, check them out and you’ll see it’s true!) but Hawkchurch has stolen a little of my heart with all these extra touches around the park…

Winter is coming and it’s time to prepare… (hah!). Let’s learn all about Winterisation and how to take care of your holiday home during the colder months.

It’s getting to that time of year where your loyal holiday home will be heading off for its winter hibernation and you head home for the snowy months. Now if you are new to the world of holiday home ownership, firstly welcome to your first winter! And secondly you’re probably thinking what the heck is Winterisation? And that’s what I’m here for, also remember that our lovely team offer a Winterisation service so you don’t have to do it yourself!

So let’s see how we set up Winterisation…

first things first…

On the last day in your holiday home you will need to air it out as much as possible, open all the windows and doors, while doing this also check the window seals for any cracks and make sure all the locks are in good order.

bedrooms

Make sure to remove all valuables from cupboards and wardrobes. Take duvets, blankets and pillows home or place in vacuum sealed packs. If there is room stand the mattress on its side away from the external walls, make sure to leave all the cupboards open to improve air circulation.

kitchen

Empty the fridge of all water and wash inside to clear any crumbs and spills, and leave the door open. Remove all food from cupboards and wash with anti-bacterial solution. Don’t be tempted to leave unopened packets of food, it will encourage pesky wildlife, they will still sniff it out and nibble. Clean all surfaces, including the cooker, making sure no spillages or crumbs are left, and make sure to leave the cupboard doors open.

Even though our parks are under 24 hour security, even during closing, we do suggest that you take your valuables with you, including TV, DVD player and any music systems you may have. Make sure to clean all surfaces in case of food spills or crumbs, move all sofa cushions away from the exterior walls and roll up and loose rugs and stand on end in the middle of the room.

After turning off the water supply, lift the lid on the toilet cistern, flush the toilet and as it refills add anti-freeze in to what is left. Remember to remove the shower hose and shower head as these could become damaged if any water freezes in them over the winter.

Check that all guttering and downpipes are in good order. Try to block any gaps that wildlife could use to gain entry. Make sure to take a look at the roof, chassis and any skylights for leaks or loose joints. If your steps are removable then place inside the holiday home for safe keeping away from the weather. Try to clear all vegetation that might have grown close to or underneath the holiday home to discourage pests.

Any loose items outside, such as storage boxes or chairs need to be safely locked away. Consider removing curtains or nets to avoid mildew, and make sure to vacuum all the carpets and clean surfaces to remove any food crumbs.

Phew! During the colder months your lovely holiday home can become a little poorly if not cared for properly. That’s mostly getting the holiday home ready for its winter hibernation, there are other bits too, like drain down of the pipes, but check out our  Winter Checklist post for more on that. If that all seems daunting and time consuming don’t worry, we offer a fabulous drain down service to take the all the technical stuff off your hands, as well as offering a Deep Clean Service to take all the cleaning off your hands too! Ever wonder what it’s like to be an owner at Seaview Holiday Home Park? Well I’m here to give you a little taster of how amazing it is…

So I’m here to shout about one of Darwin Escapes’ undiscovered gems, Seaview Holiday Home Park, perfectly situated along the North Wales Coastline. Welcome back to our owners, for a brand new year of creating memories and fantastic fun in your holiday homes!

I hope you had a lovely winter, and that you are now looking forward to getting back to visiting your holiday home! But you are probably not looking forward to spring cleaning your holiday home, knowing where to start is the hardest place, so Darwin Escapes is here to save the day!

and in honour of national clear your clutter day (19th March), here are our top tips for Spring cleaning your caravan…

starting with…

Start with the outside, check it all out (whistle if it’s looking good…) and then get to work. Clean the gutters to stop slodge and problems during the rainy season ahead (April showers and all that…). Make sure to give the walls a bit of a wipe down with a sponge and bucket for that extra shine, try to avoid using a pressure hose as it can damage your exterior – use a fan shaped spray.

Clean those windows! Is it a sunny day? Forget about the windows and go to the beach, climb a mountain, do something fun! Sunny days are the worst days to clean the windows, you can’t see the streaks in bright sunshine, so when it’s a cloudy day get out the sponge, bucket and squeegee (it’s so much fun to say that world aloud, try it… am I right?) Start in the top left hand corner of the window and drag straight down, clear off with the squeegee and make sure to curve at the bottom of each stroke, giving a sparkly clean window and a great view!

Regardless of the amount of effort you put in, your decking will always get worn. It could be because of the weather, or all the great parties and breakfasts you have out there. Sometimes it is just in need of a little TLC. SO! Easy as pie, grab a brush and get all the leaves off it, give it a good sponge bath and spray with a hose, it will be looking plenty flash in no time… back to the parties!

and now for the inside…

Start with the carpets, it’s the hardest part of a holiday home because it means all rooms are out of bounds until they dry if you use shampoo. You can hire a great professional machine (I’ve done that, and they are great), or you can opt for the shake and vac style powder options available, which are also pretty good. Either way, clean carpets, clean feet… great smelling home!

Couches are the best place in the world, serious couch potato over here! I love lounging around and when I have cleaned and washed my couch cushions, I get this happy and smug feeling. I am a clean, lazy person! So a great quick time tip for cleaning a couch, is a steam cleaner, it rejuvenates the upholstery without damaging it and refreshes it after being away over the winter. Same goes for the bed, hoover the mattress to get the dust out, and sink into luxury relaxation, knowing it’s clean and comfy!

the dreaded…

Oven! I think the oven is one of the hardest places to keep clean, we use it everyday right? So things get stuck to it and you think ‘oh I will get that later’ and before you know weeks have past. I learned a pretty cool life-hack for this, fill a bowl with water and put it in the oven for 20 minutes to loosen all the dirt, grime and food, then just clean away. Perfect, easy and sparkling-like-new oven!
