The British like to think they know a thing or two about the sandwich, even going so far as to claim their Earl of Sandwich invented it – although it’s likely he copied the design from early Mediterranean fast food boffins. From the vegemite sandwich of Australia to the frankly weird Quebecois hot chicken sandwich, every nation has its spin on the bread envelope – and they are often as calorific as they are delicious.

Take the Mexican Cemita, for example: packed with meat, Oaxacan cheese, avocado, chillies, and pungent papalo, it’s no wonder this seeded bun weighs in at over 800 calories – although with all that spice going on, you’ll probably break a sweat trying to eat it. Track it down to its hometown of Puebla, and they’ll even make it for you with a traditional cheesy fringe. The Belgian Mitraillette (or ‘submachine gun’) is more of a no-nonsense way to plug that hunger – and fill those jeans. Stuffed full of meat, chips, mayo and onions, the Brits will be kicking themselves that they didn’t think of it first.

Asia has a more delicate approach to the sandwich: India’s Vada Pav puts a spiced potato fritter between the slices, weighing in at just 300 calories and available from street vendors for as little as 25 rupees. The Japanese Yakisoba-pan is even less fattening, not to mention delicious with its noodles-and-meat interior padded out with vegetables and pickled ginger.

But what of that Canadian oddity? You’ll find chicken between the covers (fair enough), but then the whole thing is soaked in gravy and covered with peas. Along with its Worcestershire sauce, mustard, cayenne pepper and ketchup, it makes for a soggy prospect, and you’ll probably need a fork. Not quite the convenience food the Earl had in mind, but surely he would applaud the continuing inventiveness of the world’s sandwich pioneers.

This family run zoo has a rags to riches tale, and is now one of the most important and knowledgeable zoos that specialise in tigers and lemurs. The Isle of Wight Zoo, known originally as Sandown Zoo for the beach it is located on, came into existence in the 1950’s and was originally very popular. However by the 1970’s the zoo had fallen into disrepair with The Sunday Times calling it “the slum zoo of Britain”, it was on the verge of closure, but this national panning was ultimately its lifeline.

Drawing the attention for a very successful businessman, who took over the zoo in 1976, and still owns it to this day, the zoo under his stewardship has gone from strength to strength, regenerating and innovating new facilities for both guests and animals, it has firmly established itself as a centre for wild animal management and conservation!

care, conservation & education

Built within the ruins of an old Victorian Fort, the zoo faces one of the islands most beautiful beaches and back in the day the zoo was locally famous for walking its tiger cubs along the beach front. Nowadays, however, they are more focused on taking care of older tigers and giving them a happy retirement, with their fundamental values being care, conservation and education.

Every single person who works or volunteers at the zoo makes a contribution to the animal’s welfare, from maintenance and horticultural staff who take care of the enclosures, to the vets who look after them and the keepers who specialise in that animal and take the time to get to really know them, and what makes them tick. The Isle of Wight Zoo funds projects in India and Madagascar, as well as participating in the European Endangered Species Breeding programme for some of the Madagascan animals, all helping the global conservation efforts. As well as taking trips out to local classrooms, hosting school trips and guided tours all helping to educated people about conservation and making the experience a fantastic interactive one for everyone!

meet the animals

On your visit go and meet Casper, (not the ghost), the strikingly beautiful pale lion! Casper is a rare white lion who was born snow white, and as he has aged he is now a beautiful pale blond colour, he is in his prime and likes to tell everyone with is very impressive roar. His half sister Frosty will also be around, and lovely lady Nahla too.

Specialising in tigers the zoo is home to 5 of them, with 2 having backgrounds in the circus. Lola was rescued from a French circus along with her brother Sultan who sadly passed away a couple of years ago. The other tiger rescued from a circus in German was Simi who arrived at the zoo relatively recently in January 2016.

The zoo doesn’t currently breed from the tigers as they don’t know about the bloodlines, they are also a little bit too old and breeding white tigers is not ethical practice due to inbreeding and genetic health problems. However the tigers are very well cared for and the keepers know all their own individual quirks and personalities. For example Aysha is small in stature but big in personality, she greets her favourite keepers and then never leaves them alone, she gives lots of affection and endless purring!  Zena and sister Zia are polar opposites, Zena is a tomboy who shows no regard for her beautiful rare white coat, often jumping in muddy puddles and bouncing on her hind legs to ‘bite’ a jet of water from the hosepipe!

Zia is often seen relaxing and looking down ready to pose for all pictures, never hair out of place on her pale coat, although she isn’t as bouncy as her sister, she is still a loveable character, on her terms. Zena is a great spokescat for tigers, who creates the most impact, she is a sharp contrast in personality, between the loveable, overgrown kitten and the cat who could literally obliterate your existence in seconds if she chooses – lucky she’s fond of her keepers! Zena has actually lost an eye to glaucoma, a genetic problem caused by inbreeding, but it does nothing to take away from her beauty and stunning markings.

bank holiday weekend

This Bank Holiday weekend (1st May 2016) the zoo has partnered with the National Poo Musuem, and together they are hosting a ‘Really Wild About Poo’ event with BBC Springwatch host Chris Packham.

It is widely known that Chris has a fairly extensive collection of animal excrement, with his most precious being his giant tortoise poo! Chris has said he is “greatly looking forward to sharing my poo passion” and will even have a fun ‘Really Wild About Poo’ quiz ready for you to join in too! Pop along this Bank Holiday to the Isle of Wight Zoo and learn all about the Sloth’s infamous poo dance (once a week!) and many other fascinating facts!

Whether Harry Potter’s universe is an enviably enchanted world of wonder or alternately a frightening destination best visited only in books and films is a matter of debate. However, the good news is that all of the locations from the movies are in the UK and most of them can be visited by the general public (read: Muggles).

In between the forbiddingly expensive (it’ll cost a family of four upwards of £75 to visit the reptile house where Harry learnt he could speak Parseltongue) to the forebodingly remote (Dumbledore’s grave is free to visit if you can make it to the middle of Loch Eilt), there are plenty of more accessible options to bring the magic to life.

Diagon Alley, for example, is played by London’s Leadenhall Market in The Philosopher’s Stone. It’s still a working market and can be accessed for free, notwithstanding any trinkets and morsels you might buy. Malfoy Manner – Hardwick Hall, Derbyshire in real life – is accessible from late February through to December, tickets are cheap, and the gardens are exquisite.

Die-hard fans, however, will want to make their way straight to Hogwarts. While the main exterior is at Alnwick Castle in Northumberland, the quadrangle can be found at Durham Cathedral, which is free to enter and easily reached from Durham city centre and train station.

Wherever you’re heading, if you’re setting out from London then Kings Cross Station might make an appropriate portal: the famous Platform 9 ¾ has been immortalized with a plaque and half-disappeared luggage trolley, and the station has now conjured up a Harry Potter shop, well-stocked with wands, house-ties and, of course, the books. Here’s twelve top picks for broom-bound fans, from casual drop-ins to full-on magical treats.

If you are looking to feel the American Spirit and learn about the country without having to endure a long flight, head down to the American Museum in Britain located in Bath to learn more about this eclectic country and it’s relatively short but colourful history.

This is the only museum outside of the United States which showcases American decorative and folk art, with a number of period rooms from different eras including colonial times, where you can learn how American families have lived over the past 300 years. You will also be able to view quilts, Native American craft and learn more about the Civil War which engulfed the country between 1861 and 1865 as well as the early settlers.

modern America

Also showcased are slightly more contemporary features of popular culture in the United States with the latest exhibition celebrating American cinema, as well as popular toys and games over the years which have been spawned from these films.

Aptly named ‘An American Toy Story’, the exhibition will allow visitors to see movie props and memorabilia from films such as Star Wars, Toy Story and Frozen as well as showcasing toys such as the Millennium Falcon replica from the 1970s and the notorious Buzz Lightyear action figures from 1996 which gave parents endless Christmas nightmares due to their popularity at the time.
Visitors can also have a taste of America in the Orangery Café which serves a range of American treats including Cowboy cookies and Snickerdoodles.

Whether we like it or not, American culture has had a significant impact on British society due to the popularity of American films and TV shows, as well as the obvious cultural connections between our countries. Getting the chance to learn more about this fascinating country, which varies so much by state, really is a fantastic experience.

The American Museum in Britain really is a must see attraction for anyone staying at Bath Mill Lodge Retreat…

A stunning medieval palace that is open to all to enjoy and explore the beautiful gardens, don’t forget to visit Wynn and Brynn, the world famous Swans! The Bishops Palace and Gardens is located only a few miles away from our award winning Cheddar Woods Resort & Spa, in the heart of the historic City of Wells, a place film buffs (like me!) will know all about from the cult classic Hot Fuzz, starring Simon Pegg and Nick Frost. It was the place where they shot the location scenes for the fictional town of Sandford, a beautiful, old market country town in the heart of Somerset. The Bishops Palace is a stunning building and gardens to feast your eyes on and enjoy meeting the world famous Swans, who ring a bell to ask for dinner! I can’t even get my Hugo to sit down!

Read all about the greater good and the Palace…

centuries of history

The Bishops Palace has been home to the Bishops of Bath and Wells for over 800 years, that is a really long time, it clearly isn’t the same Bishop, because you know he’s not a vampire. So anyway… 800 years of history, with the building dating back to the 13th Century and 14 acres of beautiful gardens to explore along with the stunning well pools. You can take a look around the Bishop’s private Chapel, also built by Bishop Burnell in the late 13th Century, with its large ornate windows beautifully decorated from the time period, and being restored and taken care of over the years. A place for quiet contemplation and to marvel at the structure and architecture. Explore the ruined Great Hall, built for King Edward I, has had years of exposure to the elements when it was turned into a Victorian folly, it is now in a very fragile condition and conservation work is being carried out. Visit the beautiful well pools and marvel at the sauce of water that the City of Wells takes it name from. A piece of history in the heart of Somerset.

easter festivities

Over the Easter period The Bishops Palace is playing to host to a number of great events, from Sowing workshops to fun family activities, visit them on the 28th March for the fantastic Medieval Falconry day. A fun filled day of fabulous flying displays from beautiful birds, and entertaining information from the wonderful people who care and love them. You can learn how they are used today, as well as how they were used back in the medieval times, marvel at their skills on training and they show off their well-honed moves for the captivated audience, fun feathered day out! on the 1st April the South Garden will be home to the Jesters and Fools day, with pop up jesters, fun finger puppets and with everyone getting the chance to make their very own cool jesters hat too! The Spring Life themed day on the 8th April is a must visit, with the little crafters in the family making fun spring flower bags, decoupage photo frames and Royal spring crowns! Don’t forget to follow the brand new Easter trail either, explore the Palace and the Gardens in a brand new way!

world famous swans

Wynn and Brynn are the resident Swans at The Bishops Palace, known around the world for ringing the bell when they are hungry – I want their trainer to come to my house, maybe Hugo and Bella could learn a thing or two! The estate Swans were first taught how to ring the bell by the daughter of Bishop Hervey in the 1870’s, by tying a bit of bread on to a rope and bell, and the tradition is still carried out today! Don’t worry though, the Swans and ducks get plenty of food and attention from the visiting tourists and ground staff, so if the caretakers are away from the bell when the Swans ring, they still get food, they also feed off the moat silt bed and surrounding environment too. Spring is the perfect time to visit as you might get to see some baby swans! Which I have recently found out are called Cygnets, how cute! If you visited last year you might have one of the eight Cygnets, did you meet Ben the Swan? You may get lucky and see some new babies this year…

So why not take a trip over the stunning medieval moat surrounding the Palace, walk over the beautiful wooden bridge that is draped with Willow tree branches (sound’s like Bridge to Terabithia right?) and marvel at the beauty surrounding you this Easter!

Have a fantastic time, The Bishops Palace and Garden is perfect anytime of the year!

happy adventuring ladies and gents!

Haynes International Motor Museum is getting all revved up for the new Formula 1 season with a brand new exhibition. The Yeovil based attraction will be temporarily displaying Mark Webber’s championship challenging Red Bull Renault RB6 from the 2010 season.

Webber battled for the title in this very machine in what was one of the most exciting and unpredictable seasons in the championship’s history. The Red Bull Renault RB6 was undoubtedly the class of the field with the Australian winning four races and his team mate Sebastian Vettel picking up five wins as the pair helped the team wrap up the Constructor’s Championship for the first time in their history.

However, poor reliability let both drivers down and gave Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso and the McLaren pairing of Jenson Button and Lewis Hamilton a fighting chance in less competitive machinery. Webber still entered the final race of the season 2nd in the Driver’s Championship just eight points behind Alonso and seven ahead of Vettel.
It all went wrong for the Australian in this race with a poor strategic call following a safety car period caused by a collision between Michael Schumacher and Tonio Liuzzi relegating him to an 8th place finish and handing team-mate Vettel the first of his four Driver’s Championships.

You can now view this historic Adrian Newey designed machine at the Haynes International Motor Museum for a temporary period. This is a fantastic attraction near Cheddar Woods Resort & Spa which is a great day out for the whole family with over 400 cars on display.

There will also be a Motorland Easter Egg Hunt taking place over Easter weekend (Friday 25th -Monday 28th March) with two hunts occurring on each day at 11am and 3pm. There is no need to book and is available at no extra cost for those who have paid admission to the museum.

Why not drop in and see your favourite car?
