But dear readers, spectacular views are not the only perk to owning your own holiday home at Seaview, oh no it’s not (am I being too cheesy?). A fully equipped gym, with bikes, treadmills, cross trainers, rowing machine as well as weight machines and an abundance of free weights too! Along with a fitness ball (I have no idea what to do with that…) and a punch bag. It literally has everything you need for your work out, including a shower to freshen up after!

food

Loads of choice for food at Talacre Beach, whether you are looking for a pub meal in the lounge area or a formal meal at our beautiful restaurant, our talented chefs will have something to tickle your taste buds! On sunny days you can sit outside and enjoy a pizza, baked in our wonderful wood burner oven in the courtyard, or grab a to go fish and chips from Talacre’s very own chippy on site! We have everything from a 3 course meal to a traditional chippy tea by the beach.

entertainment

For the little’uns Talacre Beach has cheeky Charlie Bear and his talented team of Rangers, who put together a different schedule of activities everyday, from movie days, face painting, treasure hunts and even animal encounters! Then at night, the Rangers put on a fabulous show, plus fun activities for all the family in our club house, including bingo, stage shows and outside acts performing too. There is also The Loft area for teenagers to hang out in, a chillout area to make friends, as well as the fun arcade area to try your luck in too! For fun days outside have a wander around the park and see the many children’s play areas and green areas for some games for the family too.

go active

Talacre Beach is also part of the Hoeseasons’ Go Active collection; owners (and their friends and family) can take part in too – all at no extra cost; join in with the Archery sessions, try your skills in Pana Soccer, have a go at the Body Zorbing or get wet with the Sea Scooters, there is so much to do with Talacre Beach’s Go Active, schedule you will always have something to do!

tranquility spa lodge

Talacre Beach’s newest addition to the park, the Tranquility Spa Lodge, is the perfect place to indulge and relax. Offering sumptuous Aromatherapy Associates products and techniques, your full body massage will be a dream experience; or have a 30 minute recharger with a neck and scalp massage. Spruce up your fingers with a Jessica Nails mani-pedi and feel like the Queen of Beauty when you leave with a spring in your step!

So you get all this, access to an indoor heated swimming pool as well as a relaxing sauna and steam room too. You can enjoy all of these facilities and then escape the hustle and bustle of peak season by returning to your home away home, up the mountainside at Seaview. Make a cuppa in your fully equipped and spacious kitchen, put your feet up in your lounge and enjoy your unrivalled views of the North Wales Coastline.

Welcome to Hidden Britain ladies and gents! We will be unearthing those little hidden gems off the beaten path around our glorious country! So lets kick it off with wondrous walks and scenic views in the breathtaking Surrey, and these five hidden secrets are very close our own Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat, a peaceful place to use as your base. So lovely readers, read on and find some hidden gems to explore…

waverley abbey

Located on a very peaceful loop of the River Wey the ruins of Waverly Abbey are stunning. This Monastery was founded over 900 years ago, the resident monks farmed the land, provided shelter and even ran an infirmary. The ruins are so hauntingly beautiful that even Hollywood has come knocking, filming scenes from the cult classic Hot Fuzz (2007), the musical Into The Woods (2014) and brand new blockbuster The Huntsman (2016). So go and enjoy the history at this outstanding location.

godstone farm

A brilliant and interactive family fun day out, meet the llama’s, goats, ducks, pigs, ponies and bunny rabbits! Have blast at the animal handling, feeding the farmyard animals and petting the babies too (I love baby animals, so cute). Pick your favourite Hog and cheer them around the Hog’sticle course, follow the Dino Trail and dig up some bones and make sure to pose for a T-Rex toothtastic photo! Loads of climbing frames, indoor and outdoor available for all ages too! Family fun day out!

mother ludlam’s cave

This little hidden cave in the woods has beautiful and intricately made gates at the entrance, the little known spot has a charming walk in the woods before you reach the naturally formed cave. The cave is said to have been home to the White Witch of Waverly, also known as Mother Ludlam, and legend has it that the Devil, in disguise, came to borrow her cauldron one day but the witch recognised him as the Devil and refused. The witch then hid the cauldron in the nearby Frensham Church to keep it safe, the cauldron in question is still in the church to this day and was used to brew ale by the monks. See the local wildlife and the surrounding woods on a trip to the cave!

birdworld

Birdworld has over 100 species of birds to marvel at, including many unusual birds, penguins and even reindeer! You can pet the pair of reindeer, visit the Underwater World zone with over 30 exhibits to see, and watch the two species of penguins being fed. Learn about owls at the Owl Parliament and let the keepers take you on a feeding trail of the birds of prey – if you aren’t too squeamish! Explore the Outback Landing and see all the best species from the Australian Outback or head to Jenny Wren Farm and see all the best farmyard animals.

the watts gallery

The gallery was purpose built in 1904 to house the works of Victorian artist GF Watts, who was popularly adored in his home country as well as abroad and with over 100 paintings on permanent display it’s easy to see why! There is also a full programme of temporary exhibitions to watch out for too, as well as the Watts Studio that brings the process of making art in the Victoria era back to life for you to witness! Through displays and demonstrations you can see how it all happened, and join in the Learning Studio to create your own art through the workshops and relax in the tea room after your busy day!

So enjoy exploring these hidden gems whether it’s spending a fun filled day at Godstone Farm or a relaxing walk around Waverley Abbey.

Happy adventuring folks!

Visiting Bath and not sure where to go? I’ve pounded the streets, gone on the tours and eaten the goodies to help you decide! The historic city of Bath literally has an endless list of things on offer, and Bath Mill Lodge Retreat is only a short stroll from the busy city centre, making it the perfect base to explore from. This top 10 guide has lots of variety, so you’re sure to find something to tickle your fancy!

1. The Pump Room

The perfect place for a taste of the high life! The Pump Room is steeped in history with a range of meals available. You can dip your toe into tradition here and have the Traditional Pump Room Afternoon Tea, with cakes, scones and an option of champagne (it’s a must really, not an option). Relax with a cuppa and listen to The Pump Room Trio set the scene with their elegant string music.

2. The Cork Pub

With a total contrast to The Pump Room, The Cork Pub offers classic pub food and is highly recommended by both locals and tourists, with its two resident bars under one roof, and al-fresco dining area, as well as a beautiful conservatory eating area too. The historic building was originally a debtors prison, and the pub makes full use of the cellar with The Vaults bar where you can enjoy live music, comedy acts and magicians while sampling a fancy cocktail.

3. Vintage Classic Car Tour

Explore Bath in luxury with the Vintage Classic Car Tour, hire anything from a Jaguar E-Type, Alfa Romeo to a Morris Minor (the car of choice for our family, with mum having her green convertible Cilla. Her partner has a real Metropolitan Police Morris Minor among his collection, along with his three sons who all have at least one each!). So jump in a classic car and race (responsibly and within the speed limit please!) through the streets of Bath!

4. Bath Escape – Detective Tours

Take a walk around the historic city, seeing the sights and sounds while solving an exciting murder mystery! Very popular with families and teenagers (those moody years were hard!) you can solve the riddles as a group and move to the next landmark, don the Sherlock Holmes hat and put your deduction skills to the test while enjoying the beautiful Royal Victoria Park!

5. Hidden Gardens of Bath

The tour to go on if you love nosing around other peoples are gardens. Marvel at the beauty and the history of this wonderful city as well as exploring the best hidden places around. See the beauty behind the city in the private gardens of hotels and stately homes.

6. Bath Narrowboat

Fancy a slow and relaxing self guided tour of Bath from the river? Bath Narrowboat is for you, tour along the Kennet and Avon Cannals and see the city from just around the river bend! Don’t want to be the captain of your own Ragdoll? (Rosie and Jim reference!) Well no worries, enjoy an evening out on John Rennie’s Restaurant Boat, sit back and relax while someone else steers and enjoy the good food and scenic views.

7. The Makery

The Makery is a crafters dream! They run workshops for all ages and abilities, learn everything from sewing to jewellery making. The shop is stacked full of ribbon, buttons and knick knacks ( a Borrower’s heaven!). There is also a fantastic glassmaking workshop where you come home with a cool handmade (by you!) paperweight!

8. Bath’s Fashion Museum

This is a fashionista’s dream destination, a free audio guide helps you travel through 100 years of couture. With works by Vivenne Westwood and Anna Suri, the museum also has over 30 original 18th Century outfits too. End the tour with a fun children and adult (yay!) Victorian dress up area, with the option of a vintage photo shoot to take home too!

9. Royal Victoria Park

The park was opened in 1830 by an 11 year old Princess Victoria (wow!), beautiful gardens, flowers, trees and water features galore in the expanse of greenery. There is also plenty to do for the younger and more sporty ones with a skateboarding ramp and tennis courts, as well as a boating pond, children’s play area and 9 acre botanical gardens to explore. Also the option of a 12 or 18 hole golf course, as well as a putting green to practice on too! Keep a look out of Bailey’s Balloons and see the city from a birds eye view in a hot air balloon ride!

10. Roman Baths

This is probably the most famous attraction in Bath, the award winning audio guide will travel through the history with you. Enjoy the short demonstrations on the people of Aquae Sulis who lived just down the river, marvel at the temple pediment in the Roman Baths Museum, and see the strangely beautiful Gorgon’s Head statue, which was a symbol of the Goddess of Sulis Minerva (not Professor McGonagall Potterheads!). Goddess Minerva was worshipped at the temple over 2000 years ago! See the private alters with tributes and sacrifices to the image of the Goddess Luna (notice a theme here?). And lastly visit the great bath, the scared spring and the spring overflow and watch the fantastic Roman drainage system in action (what did the Roman’s ever do for us?) A fun and history filled day out.

So the next time you are visiting Bath Mill Lodge Retreat, either for a day stop in one of our unique Norland Lodges or a full weeks holiday in a larger family lodge, you wont be lost of things to do!

Create memories that will last a lifetime amongst the trees with Goodleaf. The Award winning Goodleaf Tree Climbing provides the perfect offbeat adventure for anyone looking for something a little bit different the next time they enjoy a holiday in the Isle of Wight.

No matter how old you are, the adrenalin created by tree climbing never goes away. So if you’ve got a nerve for heights, head to Appley Park and enjoy a great day out for the whole family.

an unrivalled experience

Goodleaf Tree Climbing advertises itself as being designed for the whole family, with ages eight and over welcome to the attraction. All that is required is a nerve for heights and a desire to get amongst the trees.

Located in the beautiful Appley Park in Ryde just behind the golden beach, you will enjoy a unique two hour recreational tree climbing experience like no other in a magnificent oak tree which is located in the centre of the park.

If you are willing, you can climb 15 metres high to a point where you will be able to enjoy stunning views over Appley Beach and the Solent. There is no pressure to reach the top though, you can go at your own pace and Goodleaf’s friendly staff are there before hand to show you the ropes and offering support where required.

There is also no need to be concerned about fatigue, with plenty of resting places during the ascent in the conveniently placed canopy hammocks. This is a no pressure environment which is designed entirely for family fun, so you won’t feel any pressure at any point.

a great family day out

Appleby Park is somewhat of a hidden gem of the region, and it’s not just popular with climbers. There are plenty of scenic walking routes to be enjoyed in the woodlands and also on Ryde beach which runs alongside the park. They will also be sure to have hours of fun in the children’s play area which sits between Goodleaf and the beach. This secure area features an exciting pirate ship climbing frame, so the adults can have a rest after all the climbing and simply enjoy the surrounding area.

If you’re looking for refreshments, you can enjoy tea, coffee or squash on the Goodleaf picnic blanket. We’d also recommend sampling one of their mouth watering Tree Climber’s Flapjacks!

Being located just less than six miles from Woodside Bay Lodge Retreat, Goodleaf Tree Climbing is ideally located and a great place to visit if you are looking for a fun family day out on the Isle of Wight.

Happiness is currently becoming the new buzzword in mental health circles, but have you ever wondered what actually is happiness? So have we…

So positive thinking, well-being, mindfulness and now happiness, it seems that as a society we are becoming more aware of our mental health. Happiness, however, is very hard to define and it’s impossible to interpret it to everyone’s satisfaction. Some see it as success, money, fame or social media approval (more likes), others view a fulfilling life through voluntary work, family time or work recognition. This is because the stimulus for happiness is subjective, and what works for one doesn’t work for all, this makes if difficult to define.

measuring happiness

Being difficult to define doesn’t mean it can’t be measured, and over the past 10 years the science of happiness has gained a fair bit of attention. This is due to studies showing that modern living is actually depressing, from our attention spans shortening due to technology and comparisons of social media lives to the constant stream of negative new stories beamed to us.

Since the times of the Ancient Greeks and Aristotle happiness was thought to have a least two aspects; hedonia (pleasure) and eudaimonia (a life well lived). However contemporary psychology is evolved into positive psychology, thanks to the father of positive psychology, Dr Martin Seligman, he has researched and defined a new element to happiness. The new component to happiness is engagement, referring to friends, family and work, so using this component along with hedonia and eudaimonia a scientific term has been defined for happiness and called Subjective Well-being (SWB). This defines a person’s cognitive and emotional evaluations on life, using honest self evaluations happiness is measured using a combination of life satisfaction and feelings of fulfillment.

the science

The stimulus of happiness is located in the hippocampus (haha hippo…) and this part of the brain is also responsible for positive memories. Once the hippocampus has been stimulated Serotonin and Dopamine, which are neurotransmitters and are released, these chemicals are the warm and fuzzy feelings you get when you’re happy. Serotonin helps to regulate appetite, sleep, mood and a few other key emotional states too. Dopamine is responsible for movement and emotional responses, as well as the very important reward and pleasure centres of the brain.

a few statistics

Okay so you’ve had a loose definition while understanding happiness is subjective, so here a few interesting statistics about happiness you may not have known before;

  • Sleep deprived people remember up to 81% of negative words, as apposed to only 31% of positive words
  • Married people are 10% happier than unmarried people (probably due to the everyday engagement they have)
  • Having children decreases happiness by 0.24% (due to extra worry and concern for their well-being and future)
  • 94% of the people in Iceland are happy (not the shop, the country…)
  • Happiness is good for your health; happy people get less sick and generally live longer.

But one of the most important stats is Dr Martin Seligman’s analysis of happiness. He says that happiness is roughly 50% genetics, 10% life circumstance and the remaining 40% depends on your daily activities. This means 40% of happiness is in your control and depends on what you do to make yourself happy.

And always remember, take a breath, keeping moving forward and always be kind to yourself.

Here at Darwin Escapes we take care of even the smallest guests, learn more about our Insect Hotels in this blog…

Darwin Escapes tries to be as eco-friendly as possible, using sustainable materials, locally sourced around our locations, low energy bulbs in our holiday lodges and buildings as well under taking fantastic flora, nature and wildlife conservation efforts. At all our locations we have our very own Insect Hotels as part of our eco-ethos.

let’s talk bugs!

An average garden has over 2,000 different species of insects, so just imagine how many species only one of our holiday parks have! Our insect hotels provide the right kind of habitat that will increase the number of beneficial insects to help with our plants and flowers around the parks. At Tilford Woods Lodge Retreat our insect hotel is so much a part of our park that it even has it’s own lodge number, why not hunt it down and see for yourself on your next visit?

Check out this resident at one of our Insect Hotels!

want to build your own insect hotel? it’s easy!

Building an insect hotel is easier than you think, and with lots of different sections to provide nesting facilities, particularly during the winter where it will offer shelter and refuge for many types of insects! Last year it was wildly publicised that wild invertebrates, like bumblebees and solitary bees are declining in numbers, which is bad news for all of us (watch Bee Movie and you’ll see what I mean!). Providing home and habitats for them helps to contribute to the conservation needs, and you’ll grow very attached to your lovely buzzing buddies!

it’s all about the view

Most insects like damp and cool conditions, but would still prefer the warmth of the sun if they had a choice (who doesn’t?), so make sure to pick the perfect spot for your hotel. Somewhere in the semi-shade, near a bush or under a tree is best and if you have other wildlife features in your garden, a hedgehog hotel, pond or even an over grown shrub, put it near these too. Remember to make sure it is level and on even ground as the hotel can become quite heavy.

sound structure

For the basic structure use old pallets or strips of wood to create the shape of your choice (although a square or rectangle is probably best) and however big you chose, try to use recycled or reclaimed materials as much as you can.

tiny homes

As with humans, there is a limit to how many people can fit in one home and one tiny Insect Hotel doesn’t fit all the insects. You’ll need specific things to attract the bug buddies you want, this BBC article is the perfect guide for that. As a basic you will need things like old plant pots, blocks of wood with holes drilled into them, old bamboo canes and corrugated card.

insulation

We all need a little insulation in our homes to keep us warm, and tiny insects are exactly the same. Make sure to fill in the holes in-between the pots and wood, use straw, hay, dried leaves and bark, this also provides plenty of more hiding spaces as well some warmth during the winter.

food (it is always about food)

Like me, our little friends are very into their food so when placing your hotel make sure to leave a little room for plenty of nectar producing flowers around it, not only do they look pretty but they help out our little buddies with a breakfast snack not to far away from home!

And that’s it, you’re now a hotel owner, a concierge to the tiny insect world!
Happy Adventuring and have a blast this summer helping our friendly buzzing buddies find their perfect holiday home!

Ever wonder how our holiday parks look as fantastic as they do? It’s not really by magic, take a look at our all-star Grounds Team at Talacre Beach! Talacre Beach Holiday Home Park is located on the North Wales coastline, just a 5 minute walk away from the Beach. This 5 Star, award winning park has loads to offer, from our fantastic entertainments team with their Go Active programme to the culinary delights of our fabulous restaurant! But first impressions are important, and our talented Grounds Team make sure your first impression is a beautiful one!

Meet Brad (our resident David Beckham look-a-like), he is our Head of Grounds but as you can see that doesn’t mean he doesn’t like to get stuck in! (I think he really is stuck in that bush…). A very friendly and funny bloke, Brad helps to organise our Grounds Team and keep Talacre looking 5 Star fantastic!

A photo collage of Brad from the grounds team at Talacre Beach

In the image below is Phil, who is the newest and youngest member of the team, having recently left the leisure department as Talacre’s lifeguard to join the wild outdoors! Phil, convinced he looks like Smitt from New Girl, loves his new position, out in the sunshine and happily joking with the rest of the lads on Talacre’s Grounds Team. Phil is trimming the side entrance to Talacre’s Lodge accommodation in these pictures, along with a lot of laughter, and a few poses.

photo collage of grounds team member working on the gardens

Brad, Phil and Jon are working hard on the lodge accommodation’s garden, they do this every Friday, which is our ‘change over’ day, so as not to disturb any guests in the lodges. This gives them only a short amount of time to get the gardens looking perfect for the next guest! In the picture below Phil was using a big scary machine, called a Long Handled Hedged Trimmer, I was slightly scared for my life and abruptly stopped teasing… But there was nothing to worry about, as you can see safety comes first at Talacre Beach, and Phil was very professional, efficient and wore all his safety gear!

A photo collage of Brad, phil and john from the grounds team at Talacre Beach

Below we have the lovely Emyr and Luke, who were working on the second lodge, trimming the mini-trees (I’m probably going to get told off calling them that…), and check out that lawn ladies and gents! Absolutely immaculate, both very lovely blokes with ready smiles and who really enjoy their jobs!

A photo collage of Emyr and Luke from the grounds team at Talacre Beach

Below is the fabulous Jon, another friendly face who loves a chat with our great holiday home owners. In the images below he is working on the flower beds around the park, putting compost on them to help keep them nourished and looking healthy, as well as checking on our smallest guests here at Talacre Beach in the insect hotel!

A photo collage of Jon from the grounds team at Talacre Beach

Our Grounds Team work super hard to maintain our beautiful park, working across all areas of the resort as well as feature aspects around the surrounding area too. You will often hear them laughing and joking as you wander around the park, they are a very friendly bunch, come rain or shine, so stop to say hello if you see them, or give them a wave and let them know how much we love them!

So now you know how the magic really happens here at Talacre Beach, our very own bunch of wonderful green fingered heroes take care of everything!

Visit one of the most traditional attractions in the Isle of Wight, a charming and very realistic model village! Godshill Model Village is located on the picturesque Isle of Wight and is not far from our brand new redevelopment Woodside Bay Lodge Retreat! One of the best things about the island is that everything is within around a 20 minute drive away, making Woodside Bay the perfect base for your Isle of Wight adventures!

a family business

Godshill Model Village is family run business, purchased in the late 1960’s by Robin Thwaites it was in desperate need of some TLC and repair. Robin’s vision and keen eye for detail has set the standard and his daughter Penny, along with Stuart are both just as passionate! Surrounding themselves with a fantastic team they aim to give every customer a wonderful nostalgic experience.

models galore

The model village is set in the grounds of the old vicarage and when you walk in you will see a perfect scale replica of Godshill village. The models are a 1/10th scale version of real buildings in Godshill, as well as Shanklin Old Village and Chine, two of the oldest tourist towns on the island, you will find all the houses, cottages, shops and pubs in real life as you wander around the village. You’ll see the model of All Saints Church proudly overlooking the cottages, just like the real one on top of the hill, and if you stand in exactly the right spot you can see the real church and the model church below it. All the models are made with sand and cement so they weather with age, and they are even thatched like the real buildings using authentic materials and methods. With attention to detail at the heart of the model village, it comes as no surprise they have one of the most detailed landscaped gardens, with over 3,000 ornamental shrubs and many of the trees being coarse bonsai trees, treated to maintain their scale (coarse bonsai means they aren’t planted in pots, who knew?). You’ll need to visit to truly see how amazing it all is!

Drop into the shop that has a great range of products, a helpful and friendly team as well as toys, party bag ideas, nautical themed and unusual gifts. And if you find yourself a little peckish grab a bite to eat, and a cup of tea in the café!
