Whether you are looking for a full day out or just something a little bit more unique, we have put together a list of some hidden gems in Kent.

Perfect for frequent visitors or those who are new to the area, there are probably a few things in the list below that you haven’t heard about. And with our Canterbury Reach Lodge Retreat being in Kent, you can enjoy a countryside getaway and use it as a base to try out some of these hidden gems. Everything listed below is under an hour drive away from our resort and would make great additions to your plans.

Ramsgate Tunnels

Ramsgate, CT11 8FH | 41 min drive from resort

Ramsgate Tunnels offers a great day out for all the family. The tunnel network here includes the largest purpose-built WWII deep tunnel shelter in Britain, and you will learn all about the impressive history during your visit. The tour starts with a short film in one of the Victorian Railway Tunnels that is over 150 years old. From there you will explore the other tunnels and your tour guide will explain what each one was used for and show you where thousands took shelter under the town of Ramsgate.

Escape in the Towers

Canterbury CT1 2BZ | 13 min drive from resort

See if you have got what it takes to escape. This unique Escape in the Towers is set within Canterbury’s former city jail and police station and consists of 3 different themed rooms to choose from. The crime and punishment lab, the comms room, or the magna carta murder. You will have to work together as a team to solve clues and complete puzzles in order to escape. It’s a great experience and perfect if you are wanting to test yourselves.

Shell Grotto

Margate, CT9 2BU | 47 min drive from resort

If you love a trip to a museum, then you will enjoy visiting the Shell Grotto in Margate. Explore the ornate subterranean passageway shell grotto and learn all about the seashells that cover almost all the walls and roof. There are around 4.6 million seashells in total! The grotto was discovered by the people of Margate in 1835 and has been a hidden gem for tourists ever since. Still to this day they are unsure who built the grotto and for what reason, but you can explore the 70 ft of tunnels, and enjoy all the different mosaic patterns and symbols.

Canterbury Punting Company

Canterbury, CT1 2NQ | 12 min drive from resort

The Great Stour runs through the centre of Canterbury and is worth exploring during your stay. But instead of any ordinary boat tours you see in most cities try out the Canterbury Punting Company. A completely unique and memorable experience for all and probably one of the best ways to see and learn about Canterbury’s history. Step onto a classic hand-built punt and relax, take in the sights, and ask your guide any questions you may have. The tours usually last around 40-45 minutes.

Chapel Down

Tenterden, TN30 7NG | 50 min drive from resort

Just 50 minutes away from Canterbury Reach is Chapel Down, a wine estate that offers seasonal guided tours, a restaurant, and a shop. During the tour of the vineyards and winery you will learn all about the grape harvest as well as the traditional methods they use to create the sparkling and still wines. After the tour you can then enjoy a meal at the restaurant or browse their shop where you will find all sorts of wines, spirits, and a deli counter.

The Canterbury Tours

Canterbury | 15 min drive from resort

The Canterbury Tours is run by John the Ghost Hunter who has been conducting tours in the city since 1991. There are 3 different tours that you can try out during your time in Canterbury, the ghost tours which are 90 minutes long as you learn about the dark side of the city. Or you can try the Canterbury Hidden City Tour where John will take you through all the historic streets whilst entertaining you with stories other tours wouldn’t tell you. And finally, the John Hippisley Photographic Tours where you can explore the lesser-known parts of the city with great photo opportunities.

Sissinghurst Castle Garden

Cranbrook, TN17 2AB | 48 min drive from resort

Known for being among the most famous gardens in England, Sissinghurst Castle Garden was created by Vita Sackville-West and Harold Nicolson in Kent and it is under a 50 minute drive away from our resort. There are all sorts around the garden for you to discover during your visit from the Formal Garden, the vegetable garden, the tower, library and various shops. And you will find The Old Dairy Café which serves plenty of hot and cold drinks and light bites to enjoy.
