Planning an escape to Beach Cove Coastal Retreat this year?

If so, then this blog will be useful for you. During the warmer months a great way to explore the local area is by enjoying a walk so we’ve done the research for you and put together this list of a range of different walking routes around the local area of the resort. From shorter 2km walks to longer 10km+ walks there will be a walking route listed below that is ideal for you and your group.

Hillsborough Fort

1-5km walks

Hillsborough Fort and Cliffs Circular

start: Hillsborough Car Park – 3 min drive from resort

distance: 2.4km

duration: 1hr

This short circular route takes you around the Hillsborough Nature Reserve and along the cliffs of part of the SW coastal path. You can actually see this nature reserve from the resort and could join the walking route from Hele Bay but if not you can park in the car park and join the route from there. Although this is a short route it can be steep in some parts with large steps that you have to go up.

Arlington Court Circular

start: National Trust Arlington Court Car Park – 23 minute drive from resort

distance: 5km

duration: 1.5-2hrs

This 5km circular route takes you around the estate land of Arlington Court which is owned by the National Trust. You could spend a day here completing the walk and then visiting the house, park land, museum, walled gardens and enjoy a bite to eat at the tearooms. It’s a stunning area of Devon that offers a moderately challenging walk but one that everyone could complete.

Wistlandpound Reservoir Trail

start: Wistlandpound Reservoir Car Park   25 minute drive from resort

distance: 2.4km

duration: 1hr

The route that goes around Wistlandpound Reservoir is a short and easy circular trail that goes around the edge of the reservoir. Along the trail you will walk along the waters edge, some woodland and open areas. It’s a great walk for everyone to take part in and you can bring a picnic as you will find various picnic tables around where you can stop.

Baggy Point

start: Baggy Point National Trust Car Park – 30 minute drive from resort

distance: 3.7km

duration: 1-1.5hrs

This is a lovely short coastal walk that takes you along cliffside paths and farmland trails in a circular route that starts and ends at the car park. It can be busy in this area during the weekends but is still worth the visit. And you can make a day of it by staying and visiting Croyde Beach which is right next to the car park.

Hangman Hill

6-10km walks

Combe Martin and Watermouth Cove

start: Kiln Car Park 9 minute drive from resort

distance: 8km

duration: 2-2.5hrs

This is an out and pack style route that takes you from Combe Martin to Watermouth Cove and back. It is overall a moderately challenging route but worth it for the views that you will see along the way. You can spend the whole day in this area, explore when you get to the cove and enjoy a meal out in Combe Martin before going back to the resort.

Lee Bay and Bull Point

start: Lee Bay Free Parking – 18 minute drive from resort

distance: 6.1km

duration: 1.5-2hrs

This circular trail will take no longer than 2 hours to complete and will take you along a variety of trails from cliffside paths to open fields and country lanes. There are some hilly and steeper parts along the route but it is still a great walk that everyone can do. And the views and scenery that you will see along the way are definitely worth it.

Combe Martin Circular

start: Kiln Car Park 9 minute drive from resort

distance: 7.1km

duration: 2-2.5hrs

The Combe Martin circular walk is the best of both worlds as it takes you along the seaside and the countryside so you can see a range of sights around the Combe Martin area. The walk starts and ends at Combe Martin Beach and it takes you over the tops of Little and Great Hangman where you can enjoy incredible views out to sea and over the countryside.

Croyde and Saunton Circular

start: Croyde Car Park – 28 minute drive from resort

distance: 6.1km

duration: 1.5-2hrs

The Croyde and Saunton circular route takes you along the coastal path from Croyde Beach and back around fields and countryside until you end up back in Croyde. It’s a great walk if you want to enjoy some seaside views and explore some of the Devon countryside. Make a day of the trip and explore the Croyde area and have some food whilst you’re there.

South West Coastal Path

10km+ walks

Combe Martin to Ilfracombe

start: Combe Martin 11 minute drive from resort

distance: 12.1km

duration: 3.5-4hrs

This is a point to point style walk that takes you from Combe Martin all the way to Ilfracombe. The route goes around a number of different terrains with coastal paths, countryside lanes and you will see incredible sights along the way. It’s a great walk if you want something challenging and a whole day out.

South West Coastal Path: Ilfracombe to Woolacombe

start: Promenade Car Park – 6 minute drive from resort

distance: 13.4km

duration: 4.5-5hrs

Enjoy walking along the South West Coastal Path as you go from Ilfracombe to Woolacombe on this 13.4km point to point trail. It’s a great day out as you complete this moderately challenging route along the coast of Devon. You will see some amazing sights and views along the way and there are plenty of places to stop and take stunning photos along the way too.
