Before you head to Cheddar Woods Resort & Spa for your holiday it would be a good idea to find out about various walks in the local area.

We’ve done all the research for you and put together this handy list full of a range of walks varying in length from 2km all the way to 15km. Walking is a great way to explore the local area especially when the weather is nice so have a read below and see which walking routes take your fancy the most, ready for your trip to our resort.

1-5km walks

Cheddar Gorge Short Route

start: Black Rock Car Park – 9 min drive from resort

distance: 2.7km

duration: 40mins – 1hr

The best part of the location of Cheddar Woods is that it is so close to the famous Cheddar Gorge. If you are short for time or don’t want to do a long walk this Cheddar Gorge Short Route will be perfect. It can be completed in no longer than an hour and takes you out over Cheddar Gorge and back, some parts can be quite challenging but overall the views you will see make it worth it.

Mendips Circular 

start: Rowberrow Lane – 6 minute drive from resort

distance: 5km

duration: 1-1.5hrs

This 5km circular route takes you around the Mendips near Winscombe, Somerset. Popular with mountain bikers and walkers you can follow the trail through open fields and trees and take in the stunning countryside. Most people pay for parking at the pub in Rowberrow and start the walk from there which also means you could enjoy a bite to eat or quick drink there after you’ve finished the walk.

Brean Down Fort

start: National Trust Brean Down Car Park   28 minute drive from resort

distance: 4.7km

duration: 1-1.5hrs

Bean Down is protected by the National Trust and extends far into the Bristol Channel sitting high above the rest of the coast in the area. This 4.7km trail takes you all the way out to the furthest point and back again in a circular loop. There are a fair few steep hills and steps for you to get to the top and see the fort but the views you will see along the way make it all worth it.

Wavering Down

start: King’s Wood Car Park – 4 minute drive from resort

distance: 2.9km

duration: 40mins-1hr

The Wavering Down trail is an out and back style route that takes no longer than an hour to complete. The trail is very straightforward and perfect for anyone to enjoy. You will start by walking through King’s Wood before ending up at Wavering Down where you can enjoy amazing views across the countryside before heading back down the same way.

Wedmore WIndmill - walks near Cheddar Woods

6-10km walks

Cheddar Gorge

start: Cheddar Gorge And Caves Car Park 5 minute drive from resort

distance: 6km

duration: 2-2.5hrs

Cheddar Gorge is right by the resort and you can complete a full 6km circular trail from the car park just down the road from the resort. This trail is challenging in some parts but it’s an incredible walk that everyone would enjoy that takes you up and around the limestone gorge. Discover all the cliffs and caves along the way and take in the memorable views along this 6km trail.

Crook Peak

start: Strawberry Line – 4 minute drive from resort

distance: 7.2km

duration: 2-2.5hrs

Located near Winscombe, this 7.2km out and back trail is a great way to enjoy a few hours out in the local area whilst enjoying some amazing views. This walk takes you all the way across fields until you get up to the top of Crook Peak. When you’re there prepare for the winds but take in all the views. This walk is best done when it has been dry, and it is recommended to wear footwear that you don’t mind getting muddy.

Wedmore Windmill Circular

start: Wedmore Village Car Park  9 minute drive from resort

distance: 8.7km

duration: 2-2.5hrs

The Wedmore Windmill Circular is an 8.7km trail that overall is an easy route and can be completed by all fitness abilities. It isn’t too much of a busy walk but is great for hiking, running, and walking. The walk goes past the Isle of Wedmore Golf Course and up to the Wedmore Windmill before heading back around and down to where you started in Wedmore Village.

Winscombe and Shute Shelve Hill Circular

start: Sandford Road Car Park – 8 minute drive from resort

distance: 8.9km

duration: 2-2.5hrs

The Winscombe and Shute Shelve Hill Circular walk is an 8.9km trail that is overall a challenging route but one that is great for exploring the local area. On clear days you can enjoy some amazing views as you complete this walk. Make sure you wear appropriate footwear for this walk as it can get muddy in some areas if the weather has been bad.

10km+ walks

Beacon Batch Circular

start: Burrington Ham Car Park 14 minute drive from resort

distance: 10km

duration: 2.5-3hrs

The Beacon Batch Circular walk is a stunning walk that is perfect to add into a morning or afternoon during your time at the resort. The walk starts by going through fields with lots of horses before you head past trees and brooks and then eventually you end up in pine forests. You will see plenty of nature along the way with areas providing you with perfect openings to enjoy the views of the area.

Cheddar Gorge and Batts Coombe Quarry Circular

start: Cheddar Gorge And Caves Car Park – 5 minute drive from resort

distance: 15.1km

duration: 4-5hrs

This trail route takes you along Cheddar Gorge and Batts Coombe Quarry where you can enjoy amazing views of the famous areas of Somerset. Parts of this route take you along fields with livestock so take care and keep dogs on leads in these areas. There are some steeper areas along this trail and suitable footwear is recommended for the climbs and descents you will be doing.
