Before you head to Thanet Well Lodge Retreat on holiday you will want to have a read through these different walking routes in the area.
The Lake District is known for its stunning countryside, perfect for exploring and relaxing and Thanet Well is a great base for doing both. But if you have never been to the area before or are just looking for some ideas of walks in the area this blog is for you. We’ve done the research and found a range of walking routes that are local to the resort to suit all types of abilities. Whether you are after a quick half an hour walk or a full day exploring you will find the perfect route below.
1-5km walks
Hallin Fell Circular
start: Martindale, Penrith – 45 min drive from resort
distance: 2.1km
duration: 30mins-1hr
Taking no longer than an hour to complete, the Hallin Fell Circular walk is a great choice if you don’t want a walk that is too long but equally want some incredible views. The route takes you from a layby car park and up to the top of Hallin Fell. Here you can enjoy views out to Ullswater and the surrounding area. The walk is short and steep but worth it for the views you will be able to see.
Bowscale Tarn
start: Bowscale – 13 minute drive from resort
distance: 5.5km
duration: 1-1.5hrs
The Lake District is known for its tarns and there are so many that you can explore during your stay. This out and back trail takes you from Bowscale all the way to the beautifully located tarn which is surrounded by high fells. The route will take you no longer than 90 minutes and is a great choice for an afternoon or morning plan.
Brougham Castle Circular
start: Brougham Castle – 23 minute drive from resort
distance: 5.1km
duration: 1-1.5hrs
This 5.1km circular walk is the perfect choice for all abilities and will take no longer than 90 minutes to complete. Starting and ending by Bougham Castle, you will be able to enjoy walking along the river before making your way to Eamont where there is a pub you could stop at before looping back round through Brougham.
Carrock Fell via Rospow Hills
start: Carrock Beck – 15 minute drive from resort
distance: 4.7km
duration: 1-1.5hrs
This out and back style route is a steep climb at times but offers some incredible views from the summit. At the top of Rospow Hills you will see an ancient Iron Age hill fort which was believed to have been destroyed by the Romans. Overall, it is a great walk to complete close to the resort and will take you between an hour to an hour and a half to complete.
6-10km walks
Caldbeck to Hesket Newmarket
start: Caldbeck, Wigton CA7 8DU – 15 minute drive from resort
distance: 7.1km
duration: 2-2.5hrs
This walk takes you along a range of terrains from woodland, along the river and country roads. Some areas can be muddy throughout the year so proper footwear is advised. Starting in Caldbeck you will be able to enjoy the scenic trail all the way to Hesket Newmarket, here you can either turn around and head back or enjoy a bite to eat at one of the pubs before heading back.
Place Fell
start: White Lion Inn Car Park – 34 minute drive from resort
distance: 7.2km
duration: 2-2.5hrs
Sitting 657m above sea level, Place Fell offers some incredible views out across Ullswater and the surrounding countryside. Overall this route is challenging as there are some steep inclines but it is worth it for the views you can enjoy on your way up and when you get to the top. If you are after a little bit of a challenge during your stay this is definitely one to consider.
Coombs Woods and River Eden Circular
start: Coombs Wood Car Park – 26 minute drive from resort
distance: 6km
duration: 1.5-2hrs
Known for being a gentle circular route that takes you through Coombs Wood and along the banks of the River Eden. It’s a great choice for all abilities to enjoy and overall is flat most of the way around. It is specifically a good choice of walk if you are visiting in the spring and summer months when all the wild flowers are in bloom.
Kirkby Thore – River Eden Circular
start: Kirkby Thore – 30 minute drive from resort
distance: 9km
duration: 2-2.5hrs
Starting in Kirkby Thore you will be able to enjoy a scenic walk that takes you along the River Eden and through some open fields. It’s a great circular walk that will take no longer than two and a half hours, be mindful if you are taking a dog as there could be cows on the fields that you will be walking through.
10km+ walks
Pooley Bridge and Arthur’s Pike Circular
start: Waterfoot Road End, CA11 0LL – 23 minute drive from resort
distance: 12.9km
duration: 4-4.5hrs
Enjoy the 12.9km Pooley Bridge and Arthur’s Pike Circular walk during your stay in the area. Offering incredible views on a clear day of Ullswater and the surrounding area. There are various steep sections along the trail as you climb to the summit but the views you can enjoy along the way make it all worth it.
Great Calva and Knott
start: Keswick, CA12 4SY – 23 minute drive from resort
distance: 10.9km
duration: 3.5-4hrs
This 10.9km is a challenging route that will take no longer than four hours to complete but is definitely worth it for the views you will be able to enjoy. The route takes you along the River Caldew for a while until you start climbing to the summit of Great Calva and Knott. Then you can enjoy a descent back down to the car park.
