Piran Meadows offers plenty to keep everyone entertained on the resort but it’s good to know more about the local area with things to do and places to eat. what to do before checking in?
If you are going to the resort on holiday, you will be able to check into your accommodation from 4pm. But that doesn’t mean that’s when the holiday starts, before you check in you should visit Newquay as it is under a 15-minute drive away. There is plenty to see and do whilst you are in Newquay and it’s the perfect place to explore. From the independent shops to places to eat and the many beaches. You can easily spend a whole day here exploring.
what are the top things in the area?
Sometimes there is nothing better than planning a fun family day out whilst you’re at Piran Meadows. We’ve done the research for you and put together a range of different things in the local area that are the perfect additions to a holiday in Cornwall.
1. Newquay Zoo
13 min drive from resort
Newquay Zoo is a 13-acre zoological garden in the centre of Newquay. It has been open since 1969 and has been an extremely popular zoo in Cornwall ever since. As you explore the zoo you will be able to discover new animals and learn about all your favourite ones as you make your way around the hundreds of animals and plants. The type of animals you can expect to see are lemurs, monkeys, meercats, zebras, capybara and more.
2. Lappa Valley
12 min drive from resort
The perfect day out for families and under 15 minutes away from the resort is Lappa Valley. Starting in the car park you will head on a nostalgic steam train ride that takes you into a secret world full of fun. There is so much to see and do in Lappa Valley from a boating lake, crazy golf, woodland walks, play areas, gift shop, tearoom, and plenty of trains. There are also various events on throughout the year so keep an eye out for what’s on.
3. Screech Owl Sanctuary
10 min drive from resort
The Screech Owl Sanctuary is a small family run visitor attraction and is home to various birds and animals that you can learn about during your visit. There are seven species of owls to see from British Owls to West Indian Owls and everything in between as well as other animals like red foxes, wallabies, emus, racoons and more. There is no charge for entry into the sanctuary, but donations are welcome to help support all the work that they do.
4. Wheal Martyn Clay Works
23 min drive from resort
Known for being Cornwall’s secret and the only China Clay Mining Museum in the UK, Wheal Martyn Clay Works is a great day out for families. Set across 26 acres you will be able to learn about the 203 years of mining history across the exhibitions and facilities that are available. As well as the museum there is a gift shop, café, woodland walks and historic trails, and various events on throughout the year. It’s a great experience for all to enjoy.
5. Roche Rock
16 min drive from resort
Roche Rock is an ancient chapel and hermitage that can be found in Roche. It is thought to have been formed around 270 million years ago and is a popular tourist attraction to visit in Cornwall. It is a fair climb to get to the top but definitely worth it for the panoramic views out to Bodmin Moor and across Cornwall. Make sure you have a read into the many myths and legends that are linked to this famous structure.

where to eat out?
Whilst you are on holiday it’s nice to enjoy a meal out, and there are plenty of places to choose from close to the resort. So, we’ve done the research and put together a list below of various places to head to if you are wanting to eat out one day.
1. The Two Clomes
6 min drive from resort
If you are looking for a traditional family friendly pub close to the resort The Two Clomes will be perfect. They have a great menu full of delicious home cooked food and a huge range of drinks available to suit all. In the summer the outdoor beer garden is a popular choice for dining and in the winter, you will find the fire lit inside.
2. The Fox’s Revenge
10 min drive from resort
The Fox’s Revenge is an award-winning pub and restaurant not far from Newquay centre. The pub is over 400 years old and is a great place to go if you are looking for pub classics that focus on Cornish produce. Whether you are after a bite to eat for lunch, a delicious Sunday roast or a few drinks with friends in the evening you can enjoy it all here.
3. Rebellion Roast House
14 min drive from resort
Rebellion Roast House have made a reputation for themselves and are well loved by locals and tourists for how they celebrate the unconventional. Creating delicious dishes and drinks to make a dining experience like no other. Some of the food offerings include maple moonshine mussels, lemon pepper squid and brisket.
4. The Fish House Fistral
17 min drive from resort
Since you are in Cornwall you may be wanting to try one of the many seafood restaurants, one of the best in the area being The Fish House Fistral. Their menu is focused on all the classic seafood dishes that everyone knows and loves. Whilst being located on Fistral Beach so you can enjoy views out to sea as you dine.
5. Smugglers Den Inn
17 min drive from resort
Smugglers Den Inn is a 16th Century thatched pub with a courtyard, decking, beer garden and children’s play area. Offering a bisto-style menu covering everything from steak to baguettes, chicken wings to seafood chowder. They try to use as much fresh and locally sourced produce as they can to create all their dishes.

If you are going on holiday in Cornwall, it is a given that you will be planning a beach day. And there are so many incredible beaches that line the Cornish coast that it can be hard deciding where to head. Below are two amazing beaches close to Piran Meadows.
Fistral Beach
16 min drive from resort
Known for being the home of British surfing, Fistral Beach is one that you must go to whilst you’re in Newquay. Whether you are interested in surfing, the annual events that are on or The Complex which is full of restaurants and shops, there is something for everyone here. It is around 750 metres in length and is backed by steep sand dunes. It’s a great place for surfing due to the activity centre there perfect for beginners or experienced surfers.
Holywell Bay
19 min drive from resort
The perfect place to spend a day, Holywell Bay is a huge sandy beach that is surrounded by grassy dunes, rugged headlands, and rocky islands. Not only does it make a great beach day destination there is so much to discover making it a great place to explore. At the north end of Holywell Bay, you will find St Cuthbert’s Cave which is only accessible at low tides. This beach is popular for sunbathing, swimming, surfing, body boarding and sand boarding in the summer.
