No sequins were spared for this year’s Llandudno Christmas Pantomime…

The highlight of the theatre year has once again rolled around. The much-anticipated Llandudno show set sail for Neverland as the Peter Pan Pantomime was officially launched for the festive season.

Audiences were flown to a magical land to experience the childhood classic of Peter Pan be brought to life on stage. Featuring the well-known characters from the iconic J M Barrie novel and of course a panto wouldn’t be a panto without the addition of a Dame and a fully sequined and comical Mermaid – what more could you want or need from a pantomime?

The Pete Pan Pantomime stage dressed and lit up ready for a performance

This year’s Christmas show featured Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas, who swapped the cobbles and his strong Mancunian accent to don his best hook and Pirate costume to take on this year’s baddie Captain Hook, who is determined to hunt down Peter Pan and his gang of Lost Boys.

The 32-year-old, who made his pantomime debut last year as Prince Charming in Cinderella played the perfect role of the bad guy. Not only did he encourage audience members both young and old to get involved in the classic pantomime routine of ‘Oh not he isn’t!’ but he added comical humour to the role of Hook and it was great to see him portray his own version of the character with plenty of references to his old haunts of Weatherfield.

there’s so much fun to be had at the 2017 llandudno pantomime…

Andy Jones posing for a photo on the Peter Pan panto press launch

The star of the show for me was the wonderful Andy Jones who played Dame, Mrs Smee (but you can call her Myfanwy!). I’ve seen quite a few pantomimes but I’m yet to see a Dame played better than he plays his. Not only are they always full of humour but Andy adds plenty of impromptu distractions for the other cast members. He even has the ability to have an audience in stitches because he’s stuck on a high wire after trying to teach Hook how to dance, which was a highlight of the evening for many of the audiences members I’m sure, we weren’t sure if he was actually stuck or if it was part of the act – either way it was hilarious.

This year marks his 36th panto appearance and you can tell he has experience in bucket loads from the way he can turn any situation into laughter. His costumes also provided a great talking-point during the interval!

Pauline Daniels as the Mermaid in the Pete Pan panto posing for a photo

Birkenhead-born actress, Pauline Daniels also provided an abundance of comical moments, some planned and some impromptu too! Her relationship with a live audience was so great to watch and she bounced off Andy Jones incredibly well. The sparkle you saw from the trio during the Panto launch was shining tenfold when they were in character on stage. There was one scene in particular that left all the adults in the audience in fits of laughter, to avoid any spoilers, I’ll just say that it has something to do with plucking a pheasant… don’t ask!

The whole cast including The Pearl Shaw School of Performing Arts put on a jam-packed show and gave their all from the moment the curtain lifted. They provided an array of entertainment for the children in the audience, giving them plenty of moments to shout out, whether it be when a crocodile was on stage or to cheer for Peter Pan when he defeated Hook once and for all. There were also opportunities to sing along to some original and catchy songs and some chart toppers including Ed Sheeran’s Shape of You which had an interesting Peter Pan Panto twist!

Packed with plenty of entertainment for adults and children and an abundance of references to the local area, the Venue Cymru Pantomime is the perfect family show to get you in the festive mood. So take your grandparents, your parents, your children or even your best friends and you’re bound to leave in a magical mood!

Peter Pan will be at Venue Cymru in Llandudno until December 31. To book your place and sail on the Jolly Roger just visit the Venue Cymru website or phone the Box Office on 01492 872000.

Get Ready For It! The brand new musical The Band has opened in Llandudno. Prepare to be taken back in time to 1993 in this heartfelt musical which follows five 16-year-old girls all fixated on their weekly dose of Top of the Pops, Smash Hits magazine and a goal to meet the members of their much-loved boy band.

In the first act we follow the five best friends through the ups and downs of school life and when Debbie (played by Rachelle Diedericks) wins a competition to see their favourite pop group, the five friends head to their first ever pop gig filled with excitement. Suddenly the girls are left in a situation they never thought they’d have to face and part ways. (To avoid giving away any spoilers, just make sure you take some tissues!).

Flash forward to 2017, we’re reunited with the girls who are now women in their 40s and when their beloved boy band heads on a reunion tour, they pack their bags and head to Prague still determined to meet their heroes. But the trip turns into more than just revisiting the past and instead they realise they all need to say goodbye to their ghosts and rekindle their friendship.

cast of Get Ready For It! singing and clapping

This musical provides more than just a tribute to Take That. It tugs on the heart strings from the off and portrays real life stories and situations but also adds some much needed comical humour to bring you back up after the lows.

If you watched BBC’s Let It Shine then you’ll recognise The Band played by AJ Bentley, Nick Carsberg, Yazdan Qafouri, Curtis T Johns and Sario Solomon, who, as Five to Five, won the show earlier this year. They brought the Shine to the show, featuring in almost every scene and following the girls throughout their life journey – showing how a boy band can become part of your life. They provide plenty of classic boy band dance moves, as well as singing some of Take That’s most known songs such as Pray, Million Love Songs and Greatest Day but their stunning harmonies stood out best when singing songs such as The Garden and Said It All.

Cast members of The Band performing on stage

The star performance comes from young Rachel played by Faye Christall who shone on stage, she was so down to earth and relatable. The character, who Faye shared with Rachel Lumburg (older Rachel), was the lead role of the five girls and you could just tell that The Band was a massive part of her life. When things got hard she’d cry out ‘Louder Boys’ as they were signing around her which was so heart-warming to watch. Young Heather played by Katy Clayton had audiences in fits of laughter, her comic timing is much to be admired!

A personal favourite scene of mine was when both the 90s girls and 2017 women were sat on a bus with disguised members of The Band. Together they sang a beautiful rendition of Back For Good which had members of the audience singing along.

Cast of the Band during a performance

If you were once or still are a fan of a pop band then The Band will resonate with all those feelings that you Never Forget, even if you aren’t a Take That fan, you’ll still be blown away by all the amazing entertainment it offers!

I can honestly say that The Band is one of the best musicals I’ve ever seen – you will not be disappointed and it almost feels like Take That themselves are giving a nod of thanks to their loyal fans.

So take a nostalgic trip back to the 90’s and be prepared to sing your heart out for one night of unmissable entertainment!

To book tickets to see The Band (which will be in Llandudno until November 25th) visit the Venue Cymru website or phone the Box Office on 01492 872000.

OMG you guys, Legally Blonde is like totally WOW!

With plenty of surprise factor, a superb soundtrack and an abundance of pink the Legally Blonde cast took to the stage in the Rhyl Pavilion for their opening night at the seaside theatre.

The romantic comedy which first started out as a book by Amanda Brown – who based it on her own experiences at Law School – was later turned into a film in 2001 before taking to Broadway in 2007 and the West End in 2009. It follows sorority sister Elle Woods who, after being dumped, changes her mind-set and puts down the shopping bags and picks up the books determined to somehow find herself a place at the prestigious Harvard Law School to try and win her ‘one true love’ back.

With the support of her friends and her beloved dog Bruiser, Elle heads on a journey which teaches her some of the most important life lessons.

Cast of Legally Blonde posing for a photo on stage

Eurovision 2017 contestant, X Factor and theatre star, Lucie Jones took on the leading role of Elle Woods in this UK tour. She brought the typical bubbly personality we all love about Elle Woods to life on stage but added her own unique twist. Fans of the original film will notice the different take on the character, which was originally played by Reese Witherspoon in the well-known film of the same name, but Lucie really brought the sass to the show – and OMG you guys those vocals were just AMAZING.

I didn’t expect the show to be as funny as it was, there were so many comical moments both in song and during the performance that had the whole audience in fits of laughter. One particular scene where two of the male dancers come out dressed as angels filled the theatre with laughter – but I won’t give anymore away! Just keep an eye out for the scene!

The soundtrack to this life-affirming musical is just perfect in every way. There are a catalogue of tunes to get you up on your feet and leave you feeling on a high! From So Much Better to What You Want and Positive, the cast brought the energy to the high-impact performances and for those that like a good sing along, trust me, there were an abundance of catchy songs that you’ll definitely be singing for days after you’ve seen the show.

Legally Blonde cast performing a dance on stage

Rita Simons, best known as Roxy Mitchell in BBC’s EastEnders, played Paulette Bonafonte and performed some heartwarming scenes with Lucie’s character Elle. She was outrageously funny, completely full of confidence and provided plenty of comic moments for audiences. She definitely brought the fun to the party in bucket loads!

Those fans of Coronation Street and Emmerdale will be pleased to see Bill Ward in this upbeat musical. He took on the role of Professor Callahan, providing all the bravado and swagger you’d expect from his character.

Photo of Bill Ward playing Professor Callahan

From the moment the curtain lifts Legally Blonde will push you into a world full of sparkles, pink items and cute dogs, providing plenty of fun along the way!

You don’t have to be familiar with the book or film to grasp the storyline. So just make sure to practice your best Bend & Snap and head along to Rhyl Pavilion to enjoy the uplifting musical while you can!

Legally Blonde will be at Rhyl Pavilion till Saturday 28th October. Don’t miss your chance to see the smash hit musical whilst it’s on the North Wales coast! Phone the Box Office on 01745 330000 or visit the Rhyl Pavilion website to book your tickets.

Jump aboard the Jolly Roger and set sail for Neverland at Llandudno’s Christmas Pantomime. Panto season is upon us and the annual launch of the Llandudno showstopper has taken place in preparation for the festive madness to begin…

This year’s Venue Cymru Christmas bonanza will take audiences into Neverland to experience the childhood classic of Peter Pan live on stage. Featuring the well-known characters from the iconic J M Barrie novel and the addition of a panto Dame and a Mermaid (of course covered in sequined and glitter galore), this year’s annual family panto is promised to come back with that added sparkle!

Former Coronation Street star Ryan Thomas will swap the cobbles for the theatre stage donning his best hook and Pirate costume to take on this year’s panto baddie Captain Hook.

The 32-year-old made his pantomime debut last year as Prince Charming in Cinderella but will now be turning from good guy to bad guy to take on the role of Hook who is determined to hunt down Peter Pan and his gang of Lost Boys.

Salford-born Ryan burst onto our television screens on Christmas Day in 2000 and it was only last year that the actor decided to spread his acting wings from soap land into other avenues. He’s recently starred on the Celebrity Island with Bear Grylls 2017 (which we won’t spoil for those of you still yet to see it!). He’s now hoping to bring the surprise factor when he takes to the stage in Llandudno in December.

Photo of Ryan Thomas as Captain Hook

sequins, sparkles and the return of a dame can only mean one thing… christmas is on its way!

Ryan of course won’t be alone, so get ready to witness even more outrageous costumes and experience plenty of laughs when much-loved local resident Dame, Andy Jones (Mrs Smee) makes his return to Venue Cymru, especially after his hilarious comedy routines in last year’s Aladdin! This year will mark his 36th panto appearance – so with plenty of experience behind him and an abundance of elaborate getup’s, you know you’re in for a treat when Andy is involved!

Also joining the stage for the 2017 panto will be Birkenhead-born actress, Pauline Daniels who has a string of accolades to her name, performing in theatres across the UK for over thirty years! She’s also known for her tv roles in shows such as Brookside and Blue Murder and for singing her way through various musicals such as Chicago and Gypsy with the Philharmonic Orchestra. Pauline will be taking on the role of Mimi the Magical Mermaid and I’m sure she too will have a fantastic choice of costumes!

Group photo of the Peter Pan panto cast on Llandudno promenade

The trio were getting on like a house on fire at the press launch, with plenty of comical humour between them and Ryan even managed to keep Goldie the parrot in check! So if that’s anything to go by audiences will be delighted with this year’s Christmas spectacular! It’s one not to miss.

Peter Pan will be at Venue Cymru in Llandudno from December 9 to 31. So if you’re at our Aberconwy Resort & Spa or you’re planning to book a holiday at one of our other stunning parks in North Wales this December then why not get your festive frock on and join in the pantomime booing at Venue Cymru!

Tickets are available from the Venue Cymru website or via the Box Office by phoning 01492 872000.

Lyme Bay Winery are famous in the industry and have won numerous awards in different categories thanks to the efforts of their small but dedicated team who have been setting new standards with their bold and innovative approach for the past 25 years.

To give you an indicator of how good they are, they added a further 35 awards to their rather extensive trophy cabinet in 2016 alone! This included awards from prestigious competitions such as the International Wine and Spirit Competition and the International Cider Challenge. They are real masters in various category of beverage and you can sample many of their best products the next time you visit Hawkchurch Resort & Spa.

Lyme Bay winery traditional mead

The brand is perhaps most synonymous for its traditional meads including the Traditional Mead Flagon which is a Lyme Bay Winery best seller. It is a delightfully sweet and full bodied concoction which has won a Great Taste Award. It is perfect for entering the winter months, as it is sure to warm the cockles and a must try for any of you honey fans out there.

We also highly recommend the Lyme Bay Winery Ginger Liqueur which won a 1 star gold award from the Great Taste Awards in 2013. It offers a delightfully spicy after taste and subtle kick from the whisky mixture. It would work really well in a Hot Toddy, so we recommend that you stock up ahead of the Christmas season. We stock the beautifully presented, rounded 300ml bottle of their Ginger Liqueur in the Hawkchurch farm shop.

a personal favourite

From personal experience, I would recommend that any brandy lovers like myself try out their fantastic Cherry Brandy which is also available in the Hawkchurch store. It is an absolute treat for the taste buds, with the sweet taste you would expect with a cherry brandy but also with hints of sour cherries to help ensure a long lasting taste.

The 200ml square bottle is stocked here which is beautifully presented, as is the case with the vast majority of Lyme Bay Winery Liqueurs. This means that it can be re-used for household presentation purposes and guaranteed that my finance didn’t offer too many objections when I last stocked up on the product.

Just when you thought holiday breaks in Axminster at Hawkchurch couldn’t get any better…

Experience the movie classic of Dirty Dancing live on stage in Llandudno. Audiences were having the time of their lives as Dirty Dancing took to the stage in Llandudno for its debut night.

With watermelons galore, plenty of 60’s music and dance moves in abundance, the Dirty Dancing live stage show mirrored all the classic scenes from the hit 1980’s film and sent audiences wild when ‘I’ve Had The Time Of My Life’ started to be played and the iconic final scene began.

The American romantic drama follows the story of Frances (Baby) Houseman played in this UK tour of the stage show by Katie Eccles, who has featured in TV shows Mr Selfridge, Grantchester and Endeavour. At the age of 17, Baby takes a family holiday to New York’s Catskill Mountains with her older sister, Lisa Houseman (Lizzie Ottley) and parents Dr Jake Houseman (Julian Harries) and Majorie Houseman (Simone Craddock).

When she discovers that the staff of the resort are hosting an all-night dance party, she finds a new love for the world of dance and finds herself mesmerised by Johnny Castle, the resort dance instructor played by Lewis Griffiths, who has a string of theatre credits to his name including Jersey Boys, Ghost – The Musical and Legally Blonde. Baby’s life begins to change overnight as she finds herself thrown into being Johnny’s new leading lady both on-stage and off.

Cast members doing the icon dirty dancing lift on Llandudno promenade

Lewis portrayed a fantastic version of Patrick Swayze, his posture and swagger was everything you would expect from the character of Johnny. Both Lewis and Eccles had perfect on-stage chemistry and executed the final performance with ease and electric energy, managing to pull-off the iconic lift.

The live band provided plenty of entertainment and songs performed included ‘Hey! Baby’, ‘Save The Last Dance For Me’ and ‘These Arms Of Mine’ which had theatre-goers singing along. The majority of the singing was performed by Michael Kent and Sophia Mackay, who both did a superb job and belted out some of the most memorable songs from the movie with their impressive vocal performances.

Fans of the film who were sat in the audience were delighted to hear the key lines being played out on stage and cheered for lines including ‘nobody puts Baby in the corner’ and ‘I carried a watermelon’.

Johnny and Baby performing a dance on stage

The whole show provided a treat for the eyes and ears with a brilliant set which turned to give a different setting for each scene and some amazing special effects allowing the cast to play out every iconic scene from Dirty Dancing, including the water scene where Johnny teaches Baby the all-famous lift.

The talent of the Dirty Dancing live cast was unbelievable to watch. Their athleticism is to be commended and they provided plenty of passion and romance – everything you want from the dancing classic!

This is definitely not a show you want to miss!

Dirty Dancing will be at Venue Cymru in Llandudno until September 16. To book tickets visit the Venue Cymru website or phone the box office on 01492 872000.
