our history
Woodside Bay has a long history as a holiday camp from the early 1930’s, but was closed during the Second World War.
The camp finally opened again during the 1960’s, and was a popular tourist destination with great views of the Solent, it was considered one of the largest camps that Warners’ (the well-known owners) had at that time. However, Warners sold their camps in 1981, and Woodside Bay was passed from company to company; with Darwin Escapes acquiring the 35-acre land in 2010.
Here at Darwin Escapes, while redeveloping the land and resort, we were keen to protect the marshland, while working closely with the Natural England and Isle of Wight Council’s Biodiversity Officers to ensure that no important habitats were affected. This conservation effort makes our resort truly magical for our guests: on our walk through the woodland, you may even spot the beautiful glow-worms shining along the path on a warm summer night. We are proud of our environmentally-friendly approach to creating Woodside Bay, which goes all the way down to the signs and bollards around the park, made from the old wood from the Great Yarmouth pier which has been redeveloped.
Having been closed for decades, Woodside Bay Lodge Retreat was finally able to open its doors in 2016. Surrounded by wildlife and set in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty, this resort is truly a sight that has to be seen to be believed.

It’s just under five miles away from the vibrant town of Ryde, which is home to a lovely swimming pool (with some balmy saunas!), open seven days a week, if you fancy a dip. We are also just under ten miles away from the bustling and popular town of Cowes, with plenty of bars and restaurants available for great nightlife activities.
