Get ready for an emotional rollercoaster ride as Calendar Girls the Musical opens in Llandudno. The award-winning musical written by Take That frontman, Gary Barlow and writing guru, Tim Frith, restores your faith in humanity, with timeless songs and fantastic comic timing all based on an inspiring and heartwarming true story.

For those unaware of the ‘Calendar Girls’, it all came about when a Yorkshire Women’s Institute group decided to raise money for a new sofa in a relative’s room of a hospital in memory of one of their members’ husbands, by doing a cheeky nude calendar!

They sold hundreds of copies and to date, the real-life ‘Calendar Girls’ have raised a fantastic £5 million for BloodWise, the UK’s specialist blood cancer charity.

Heading into Venue Cymru last night, I could feel that this show was going to have an impact on its audience. Walking through the doors, the atmosphere was electric and sunflowers (the key theme to the story) were dotted around the theatre setting the scene perfectly.

As soon as the curtains lift, you’re thrown into a beautiful backdrop of Yorkshire, the scenery was superb, so realistic yet practical and clever in not diverting too much attention from the importance of the storyline.

The cast of Calendar girls and the producers posing for a photo

The ‘Calendar Girls’ were everything I hoped they would be. Anna-Jane Casey as ‘Annie’ plays out some heart-breaking scenes whilst her husband battles with cancer, Catherine Digges took on the role of Annie’s best friend ‘Chris’, who although isn’t the biggest fan of the more traditional elements of the WI shows true determination and grit when it comes to her bright idea to ‘bare all’ for the charity calendar.

Sara Crowe as ‘Ruth’ and Karen Dunbar as ‘Cora’ were two of my favourites on the night, their comic timing was impeccable and they both played such quirky characters but with true hearts. I’ve previously seen Ruth Madoc in other musicals but her performance as ‘Jessie’ in this production is right up there with her best, she’s a powerhouse to be reckoned with! Denise Welch plays the role of ‘Celia’ another fabulous comic performance and her rendition of ‘So I’ve Had a Little Work Done’ received some of the biggest cheers of the night!

TV presenter and author, Fern Britton also starred as the bossy new WI chair, Marie, who disapproves with the whole notion of the calendar – it was great to see her take on this feisty role.

The second half was when the show really came to life and the final scenes which saw the girls actually shoot the calendar received so much applause from the audience and constant laughter.

As an audience member being able to see a little bit of yourself in each of the ‘Calendar Girls’ definitely added to the empathy you felt for them all.

The cast did such a superb job of bringing the natural and authentic vibe of the Yorkshire village to life and the way they all bounced off each other and created that true friendship feel really added to the whole show experience. These women were incredibly inspiring, they helped to evolve the WI and in the process create SO much money for charity – they deserve only the best recognition for that and this musical did just that.

Cast of calendar girls posing for a photo on stage

Watching a popular film be portrayed on stage can be daunting, as an audience member you’re never quite sure if you’ll fall in love with it as much as you did on the screen, but with Calendar Girls I felt like the essence of the film was still strongly there and the heart-breaking impact cancer has on loved ones and the surrounding village, showing their grief but also the fight in them all to overcome the bad parts of life.

The Girls musical is an honest, laugh-a-minute, heart-breaking production which will have you crying with laughter and then crying with heartache for the women in this fantastically inspiring story.

Calendar Girls the Musical is in Venue Cymru until October 27th. This is one musical you will not want to miss! Grab your tickets from the Venue Cymru box office on 01492 872000 or visit the website.

The hit West End and Broadway show makes a splash at Venue Cymru for family fun and songs galore! This family friendly show is packed full of songs, laughs and dancing, wowing audiences and getting everyone on their feet dancing away at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru this Summer.

Following the same storyline as the Oscar winning movie, you’ll go on a journey with Shrek and his trustful steed Donkey, to help save, the somewhat temperamental, Princess Fiona. Along the way you will meet lots of fairy-tale characters, including a 14 foot dragon, a dress wearing wolf and of course, Lord Farquaad himself.

Shrek the Musical has it all, keeping all ages entertained with quick wit and fantastically timed comedy, as well as exceptional dancing and jaw-dropping vocal performances from the cast during the spectacular musical numbers.

Photo of Shrek on stage during a performance of Shrek the Musical

The cast was fantastic throughout, really having the whole crowd in stitches of laughter and singing along with them the whole way through. Steffan Harri, who portrayed the green ogre himself, was outstanding and never missed a beat while showcasing his full vocal range during the performance.

Photo of Marcus Ayton as Donkey with the Dragon during a perfomance of Shrek the Musical

Jemma Revell played Princess Fiona and she was absolutely fantastic, hitting the tone perfectly with her sassiness and sweetness. Marcus Ayton was carrying the crown for Donkey and completely smashed the role, making it his own!

Photo of Lord Farquaad during a performance of Shrek the Musical

The outstanding performance of the night for me though, was Samuel Holmes as Lord Farquaad, as he managed to steal every scene he was in and had the audience rolling with laughter throughout and really shone during his fabulous musical numbers. His comedic timing is second to none and he really did make the whole show for me, having the audience laughing along with him (he even managed a sneaky homage to Wicked, which was quite clever!).

The supporting company of actors, who portrayed the fairy-tale characters including Pinocchio, Peter Pan, Gingerbread Man and the three little pigs, were also amazing and brought the house down with their ‘Freak Flag Fly’ anthem (which I have now downloaded, it’s such a feel-good song!).

Photo of Princess Fiona and Shrek during a performance of Shrek the Musical

My favourite scene, personally, was definitely the Welcome to Duloc scene, which was so close to the movie and showed Lord Farquaad at his best, dancing around with his minions. It really did have me chuckling away for a long time after – plus the song is so catchy!

As a huge fan of the Shrek movie saga, I had high hopes for this production, and it did not disappoint. The stage, costumes and props really make you feel like you’re in Duloc, the show gained a standing ovation from the audience. It really is a must-see!

Do not miss Shrek the Musical at Venue Cymru, the production is there until Sunday 2nd September and tickets are available to purchase via the website or by calling the Box Office direct on 01492 872000.

Travel back in time to the swinging 60’s with Cilla the Musical and you’ll never want to return! The smash hit musical oozes the character of Liverpool during the sixties, the iconic music, the culture and not forgetting to chuck in a bucketful of dry humour.

Cilla the Musical is a live adaptation of the popular 2014 ITV drama of the same name which starred Sheridan Smith. It shows the extraordinary life of teenager Priscilla White (stage name, Cilla Black) and her rise to fame in the early 60’s. The gripping and heart-warming TV show was written by BAFTA award-winning writer Jeff Pope, who adapted the television mini-series for the stage and honestly, it was the best decision because it’s an absolute smasher.

The cast of Cilla the Musical on stage during a performance

Leading lady Kara Lily Hayworth plays a superb role as Cilla, drawing you into the character and leaving you laughing, crying and smiling with joy all in one scene. She powered out some amazing vocals during songs such as Anyone Who Had a Heart and Alfie leaving audiences applauding for so long the cast had to delay their next lines to allow the audience to settle. She’s honestly wonderful and everything you would want from Cilla. Alexander Patmore portrays Bobby Willis, as a loveable cheeky chappy with a heart full of gold and a lot of ambition to not only win Cilla’s heart but to help her on her way to stardom. It truly is the most endearing love story tied in with the ups and downs of success.

It’s such a treat to hear the spellbinding talent of not just Kara & Alexander but the rest of the cast too. You’re shown a glimpse of Cilla Black’s teenage years which includes her friendship with The Beatles. Michael Hawkins (John Lennon), Bill Caple (Ringo Starr), Alex Harford (George Harrison) & Joe Etherington (Paul McCartney) perform a wide range of the early Beatles’ hits with complete ease.

Audiences also get to hear some great music from the Big Three, Gerry & The Pacemakers and Mamas and Papas whilst seamlessly tying in Cilla’s early years of performing and what it was like to grow up in such a defining decade!

Photo of Kara Lily Hayworth playing Cilla Black in Cilla the Musical

The musical exudes a sense of excitement and ambition to achieve and strive for more. It’s amazing to see the 60’s rock and roll scene in Liverpool be brought back to life on the stage. The stage setting provided the perfect back drop of the Cavern in Liverpool and as an audience member you were made to feel like you were actually there and part of that buzz, when all of the new style of music was really coming to the forefront of the 60’s music industry, that today is a big part of Liverpool’s history and culture.

Cilla the Musical is the perfect long-lasting tribute to ‘Our Cilla’, one of Britain’s most loved singers and TV performers who always provided a ‘lorra lorra laughs’.

To catch a glimpse of the show-stopping musical, which is in North Wales until Saturday 25th August, visit the Rhyl Pavilion website or phone their Box Office on 01745 330 000.

Welcome to the 60s! Llandudno’s being taken back to the decade of big hair for one week only. Big, Bold and Beautiful! Hairspray wowed audiences on its opening night at Llandudno’s Venue Cymru when it provided a fresh sweet treat packed full of laughter, fun and dancing!

Set in 1962 Baltimore, from the offset it’s very easy to misjudge Hairspray, but it’s not just a musical based on a teenage girls crush and her never ending dreams to make it onto one of the biggest dance shows in the state. It’s about fighting against inequality and injustice and how a young girl uses her new found fame to do just that.

Photo of the Hairspray the Musical cast posing on stage

From the dancing to the costumes to the singing (Some of the notes the cast were hitting were just jaw-dropping!) Hairspray has it all. It’s the ultimate feel-good show and you won’t be able to stop your feet from tapping when hit songs such as Welcome To The 60s, You Can’t Stop The Beat and The Nicest Kids in Town and more start playing.

The cast is packed with talent and some may recognise the faces of Brenda Edwards (X Factor, Chicago), who takes on a great role as Motormouth Maybelle and her vocals during the number I Know Where I Have Been are guaranteed to give you goosebumps, as well as Layton Williams (Bad Education) who plays Seeweed, deservedly received a great reception from the audience, his athleticism and sleek moves are to be admired.

But one cast member I just have to mention is the leading lady herself, Rebecca Mendoza, who put her heart and soul into the teenage role of Tracey Turnblad. I couldn’t believe she was making her professional debut in this production – I’m sure, after seeing last night’s performance, she’s got a long successful career ahead of her! Her Tracey was filled full of love, humour, energy and plenty of feistiness. She had audiences howling with laughter during many of her scenes with crush Link Larken, played by Edward Chitticks, who also provided plenty of charisma.

Two members of the cast on stage during a performance of Hairspray the Musical

A favourite scene of mine from the evening featured Matt Rixon (The Ladykillers), as Tracey’s Mum, Edna, and Norman Pace (Hale & Pace) as Wilbur, Tracey’s Dad. They sang the number, (You’re) Timeless to Me, and I can honestly say I don’t think I’ve ever sat in a theatre that was filled with so much laughter than during that scene. They performed a timeless performance, which still had me giggling during the car ride home.

After seeing the 2007 movie of Hairspray far too many times to mention, I can say I was not disappointed in the slightest. You’ll come out beaming from ear to ear and with a skip in your step and a determination to follow your dreams. I can’t recommend this musical enough so make sure to wear your best dancing shoes because you’ll find it hard to keep your feet still during the whole show and you’ll definitely feel like jiving your way out of the theatre!
